Fun ideas
Anything Leap Frog that is age appropriate. I bought my niece the Leap Frog maracas for her first birthday a few weeks ago and she loved them.
Fisher Price is always reliable. I like the Peek A Blocks line.
Little Tikes is usually popular with little boys because they have little work benches and things like that.
Practical
Diapers, wipes, etc.
Clothes - Babies grow so fast. I would suggest size 12-18 or 18-24.
Good luck and have fun! The only trick is to not buy something that is too old for the child. If you buy age appropriate toys you will be fine.

You can get him a Power Wheels Jeep, motorcycle, etc. They make them smaller for the little toddlers, and less expensive than the larger ones..Those things are fun for the little ones, and is a hit. He will love riding in it mroe than any other toy he has...my son is 7 now, and got his at the age of 2, and still loves riding it to this day!! Good Luck

An age-appropriate toy (inexpensive but safe). Attach a decorative envelope containing a savings bond in the child's name. Or a pass book for a savings account which you have opened in the child's name.
Baby and parents both happy.

My one year old got this Little Tykes ride-on dump truck. It can be ridden around the house or used as a giant toy dump truck. He loves it and is constantly playing with it. (which is pretty good considering the attention span of a child this age is kind of small!)

either a piggy bank with 10 or 20 dollars in it (depending on what you can afford), or open a child bank account in his name, in which you will deposit a set amoutn every month, with bonus money on his birthdays, Christmas, etc. My brother did that for my sons, who are now 13 and 14, and they both have over $2000 in their accounts now!! This is earmarked for "car" money when they get to 16 (college is paid by me and scholarships).

A toy that sings songs but it's not too loud. Baby's love toys that make noise when they touch it.
