I'm thinking about canceling my land phone because I hardly use it. I use my cell phone. I have DSL internet connection with AT&T. Do you know if the land phone is needed for DSL to work? Thanks.

No you dont need a phone line anymore. But because you do have it with the phone line currently - when you call to disc the POTS (aka as dialtone) you will lose your DSL - then you will have to call back to get a new DSL connection - and the DSL w/o Phone option is actually more. So If I were you I'd just keep it the way it is now and perhaps get rid of any features that you are not using to lower the bill.

Yes you need a land line for DSL. But, you can get internet service through the cell towers. It's quite a bit more expensive though. Depending on what you pay for a land line and your DSL, it might be worth looking into. Also, cell phones work at my house but, not good enough reception for reliable internet service.

You will no doubt loose your current DSL internet connection if and when you cancel your land phone service with AT&T. Because you would then be using your cell phone, I think it reasonable for me to assume that you want DSL over your current cell phone service. I have not heard of anyone getting DSL level of speed with their cell phone internet connection. But, I suggest you check with your current cell phone service provider to find out exactly how fast their internet service cell phone connection is so that you can compare its speed with the DSL speed you currently get with your AT&T DSL connection via your land phone. I don't think you'll get a more specific answer from people who do not work directly for AT&T.

No! However, they make it hard for you to get it. DSL has nothing to do with your dial tone at all. They "condition" the line to give you DSL by running copper line (which also carries the dial tone) through a DSLAM to give you a connection to the ISP. That's why you need a filter on your dial tone. Anyway, if your local baby bell won't let you do it there are CLEC's (phone company competition) that will request a "dry" pair to your home and will be your DSL provider. I know ATT and COVAD are two you can check out. The local phone company will charge them for the lease of the wires going to your house and it is generally speaking, good service, but if issues occur, the tech's are a pain in the butt and we will only verify continuity to the prem.

Yes, DSL runs through your phone line, so you have to have it. If you want though, you can switch your phone plan to a measured or message rate plan. The line itself is very inexpensive (only about $8 in Ohio, not sure about other states), & you won't pay more unless you use it (which it sounds like you wont'). I have this set-up. I don't own a phone (just a cell) & it works great.

Just like another poster said, you might be able to get what is called "naked DSL". This means DSL without having traditional phone service. It will depend on your area as to whether or not the phone company will allow it. Just call them and ask if they have "naked DSL"

Yes, but most phone companies have a really cheap plan that charges you for each outgoing call, with Verizon it's called an "economy plan". Since DSL doesn't make outgoing calls, you don't get charged. With Verizon you pay like $10 a month.

Yes, a lan line is needed for DSL with a minimum of local calling. Depending how many linear feet you are from service will also have an effect on download speeds too.

AT&T makes it impossible to have DSL without their phone packages. Even if you switched to a dial tone only, your DSL price would increase significantly.

I got rid of them altogether and use cable.
