I personally don't like Sony Cameras. All the features on them are different than any other camera brand. May not sound like a bad thing, but just wait until you see how much easier the others are compared to Sony. I like the Exilm cameras. They have some of the most 'digital imaging' features you will find on a digital camera, most of witch people never or rarely use. You will have to keep in mind that the flash is very small and most low light. indoor pictures will not turn out as you might expect. I would also recommend Kodak (most user friendly) and Fuji (only the S series). Good luck...hope this helps.

If you want to put it in your pocket I would choose the Olympus MJU740 at the moment. 7 MP with 5x zoom, Image Stabilization and weather proof.

If it doesn't have to fit in your pocket I would be seriously looking at the Fuji S6000, quite a nice feature set and quality for the price.

If the budget allows I would buy a Nikon D40 SLR. Serious camera but no end to the possibilities!

I WILL NOT MET ION MODEL NUMBERS BUT WILL COMMENT ON FEATURES. I HAVE 3 OLYMPUS UNITS WITH GREAT SUCCESS FOR ME AND THE KIDS. THE BIGGEST PIXEL RATING IS NOT REQUIRED !!!! EXAMINE YOUR USE...JUST PICNICS AND FAMILY STUFF 2-4 MEGS IS GREAT...REMEMBER YOU ARE PROBABLY NOT PRINTING 17"X22" PHOTOS SO THAT IS JUST WASTED SPACE ON THE PC. I PRINT 8X10 WITH FILES AT 1-2 MEGS EACH AND THEY ARE NEAR PHOTO QUALITY..I USE A THERMOGRAPH PRINTER NOT AN INK JET.. THEY MAKE GREAT 4"X6" PRINTERS FOR ABOUT $100 THAT WILL DO GREAT IN HOME PRINTS... IF YOU THINK YOU NEED ZOOM LOOK FOR AN OPTICAL ZOOM VS DIGITAL, USE DIGITAL ONLY IF YOU HAVE TO, IT PIXELIZES YOUR ENLARGEMENTS... ALSO CONSIDER BATTERY PACKS VS AA BATTERIES IF YOU DON'T CARRY SPARES YOU CANT GET THEM AT THE CORNER DRUG STORE. THE LAST POINT IT MEMORY STORAGE, XD IS FJUI AND OLYMPUS EVERYONE ELSE USES SD OR COMPACT FLASH, THEY ALL DO THE SAME THING. IT IS LIKE VHS VS BETA, SO PICK A FORMAT THAT WORKS FOR YOU AND MAYBE SHARE WITH OTHER FRIENDS/FAMILY. ALWAYS BUY EXTRA BATTERIES AND MEMORY FOR TRIPS..IT IS EASY TO DELETE PHOTOS LATER. I HOPE THIS HELPS
