I've seen several negative remarks attached to the youtube.com clips for the Russian martial art called Systema. (Some of the clips do make it easy to poke fun.) Do you have an opinion on this method? And why do you feel that way?

Having studied the style, along with several others, I can say that part of its effectiveness lies in its uniqueness. Most who have'nt studied the style don't recognize the effectiveness of the techniques at sight. Part of that is because the methods of trainins are so different than in other styles. Also, systems as one of the few styles that has retained a focus on practical combat effectiveness rather than on aesthetics. I have used it effectively both on its own and in combination wiht other systems in situation where the effectiveness of techniques means the difference between life and death. While it lacks the formality of the Japanese styles or the aesthetics of the Chinese systems, it is on a par with them as far as effectiveness and simply put...if it wasn't useful in practical combat situations, I would neither use nor teach it.

It's an awesome fighting style.
Systema is only taught to Russian special forces(Spetznaz).
It was designed to fight mainly against more than one enemy.
It's like a mixture of Aikido, Jiujitsu, Sambo, Boxing, Muay Thai, and other different fighting styles.
By the way, did you ever heard of command sambo?
I heard this fighting style is kept a secret until Perestroika, taught to KGB and other special forces. It's one of the best assasination arts.

It's a bit different than Sambo.

I took sambo for a bit to learn breaking, but never got too heavy into the russian arts. It is hard to find credible teachers here in the states for the soviet military arts

I have never taken a systema course myself or sparred someone claiming to use systema.

I have a hard time believing that the same stuff taught to military is the light touch stuff you see in systema promo videos however I have seen teachers disguise thier art well so it looks light as well. but the systema vids I've seen look like compliant training vids.

Here is a fair and unbiased review of a systema class, this review also points out its own flaws so i would hold it as credible.

a not nice article pointing out some bs things systema has claimed to be able to do.

I agree, its very fluid. I am unsure on how effective it is. You must be very aware to protect yourself. Reminds me of Aikido also. I would stick to the japanese, chinese arts.

Systema, is stupid. plain and simple.

its just like the people that claim they can make someone pass out, with out touching them. Using chi.

but, for some reason, they could never do it on someone else, that is not one of there students.

some martial arts are like a religion.

i believe its real so, to them its real. and no one else and convince them otherwise.

Well, maybe if u kick there buts.
