just tell them. one year my mom was broke so she gave us iou's of little pictures and words of the things she was going to give us. we got them a few weeks later. honestly, it's the family togetherness that makes christmas special. if you stay calm your kids will, too. the more you stress about this the less love you'll be giving to you family. just have a good time. sometimes things don't go how you've planned. and your traditions will be there next year.

Is it a credit card or debit card?

On a "credit" card, by law, Fair Lending Act, basically (some restriction, on where the fraud took place - the further away the more protection) you can only be held responsible for $50 of the fraud. If a "debit" card, then you are fully responsible, unless the funds are re-claimed.

This is the reason people should not use "debit" cards. Use "credit" cards prudently (pay the full balance off each month) an you have more protection from fraud etc. Also, sometimes "debit" cards will reserve a minimum of $50, in your bank account, even though you only buy say $20. This happens at gas stations a lot and people will travel on long trips and find they can make no purchases even though they have money left in bank account (example, many $20 purchases reserved $50 each - the money did not come out but it temporary reduced your purchasing power by the $50 each.)

Don't you have a credit card that you could use? Just use a credit card that does not have any balance on it and pay it off when the banks gets your money back. Credit cards are not necessarily to borrow money, they are for convenience. I always use credit cards for all my purchases and then pay them off at the end of the month. By the way if you were using your credit card instead of banking card, this wouldn't happen to you. Because if someone gets a hold of your credit card and charges up 1000s of dollars, the bank gives you a provisional credit the minute you complain. Then they still take 10-15 days to figure out what happen, but you don't suffer as badly. If you don't have a credit card, maybe you could ask your bank if they would give you a provisional credit for those charges from Italy. Anyway, there should be a way out of this. The banks push these banking cards, there should be a way, they help you when someone steals your card number.
Anyway, TALK TO YOUR BANK. If they don't take care of you, switch this bank as soon as this mess is cleaned up.

As opposed to the answers above, a debit card is safer than a credit card - unless someone knows your PIN (which means that you would have had to tell someone or show someone [by not covering it up when entering it]).

However, If a debit card backed by VISA or MasterCard (which most of them are) is run through and charged by fraud, then VISA or MasterCard should fully recompense you for your losses. Go to their websites and see for yourself.

Credit cards on the other hand have horrible interest rates (do you know they shred people's payments just so they'll be late and jack up the interest rates?) and are snakes that are horrible to deal with when you're struggling... and as Dave Ramsey says, "When you play with snakes, you're going to get bitten."

First, I am sorry for this. Some people are sick and don't realize that doing something like this can affect people and their children. Kids can easily be comforted during bad times, tell them the truth and then take them on a walk, park, to relax and play around. Thankfully you are getting some of the money back; most times credit card companies don't do that.

If your question is, "How do I tell people that someone stole my money and I won't have enough to make Christmas happen on time?", I'd suggest you tell them, "Someone stole my money and I won't have enough to make Christmas happen on time."
