the arabic word for infidel and the common english word for infidel do not mean the same thing. Thats the problem with translating. If you study a bit of islamic history, you will find that the arabic word for infidel is "kaffir". One who is a kaffir is not simply one who does not believe, but one who does not act justly, with piety, "good". If you read into the history, youll find that muslims without intellect are sometimes called kaffir, and "moral" people without faith are sometimes called kaffir. For the most part, from what I understand, the immoral and unjust person is the bigger kaffir. You can be a muslim, but without being just in your actions, you are worse off than the moral athiest. MUSLIMS ARE PROHIBITED FROM CALLING ANYONE AN INFIDEL-ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE.

According to my information (I may be wrong) an infidel is one who does not believe in Allah. Since Jews and Christians do believe in God, they are called "People of the book" and not infidels.

ALLAH doesn't mean GOD.
GOD mean Ar-Rub who created the universe , human, animals...etc.
ALLAH means the one to be worshiped alone and every sort of prayer to be directed to him alone so, this is why the Infidels of Mecca agreed about the first meaning of Ar-Rub but not the second part whom need to be worshiped alone!
The same apply to Christians and Jew they do not worship ALLAH alone but include Jesus PB UH as the son of ALLAH and the same apply to Jew. But the those who hold a book they have a bit different treatment.

an infidel will be someone that does not recognize the five pillars of Islam. for your question, the first pillar is the shuhada - the testimony, which mean that an Islamic person should say " Allah is great, there is no god beside Allah, and Muhammad is the true prophet of god" (my translation, not exactly accurate).

The Holy Quran : Chapter: 2 (Al-Baqarah), Verse:259

[2:259] Hast thou not heard of him who disputed with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah has given him kingdom? When Abraham said, 'My Lord is He Who gives life and causes death,' he said, 'I also give life and cause death.' Abraham said, 'Well, Allah brings the sun from the East; bring it thou from the West,' Thereupon the infidel was confounded. And God guides not the unjust people.
