Schnauzer tails are docked when the puppies are only a few days old (3-4). The reason for this is that the nervous system is not fully developed so is a less painful procedure. The recovery from it is within a few minutes- no ansthesia is used, and depending on which version of the Schnauzer (mini, standard or giant) will depend on whether surgical glue or surgical glue and sutures are used to close it.

Cutting their tail doesn`t have to be done actually, it`s really up to the owner. But if you do, it isnn`t cut off i don`t think, actually if their really young they just put ruber bands on the spot were they want it, them it just eventually falls off causing the puppys no pain. But if you do get it cut off it is slightly better for the dogs, because 1. it won`t get full of burs or stickers, 2. it will stay ceaner when they use the bathroom, 3. the dog really doesn`t need that long of a tail, and the breed is supposed to have a short tail anyway. that goes for most small dogs. Also it would look really funny if a schnauzer is walking down the street and its tail is longer then its body. But anyway, I don`t mind them cutting the tail off, because i just think it`s better for the smaller dogs, in poportion wise and health, and I have a dog who`s tail was cut short when he was a puppy. Also, to answer the other part of your question, They do it within the first year, but it can be done later, it`s just the dogs might actually miss their tail because when they`re older they tend to know it`s gone.

Docking a tail is a personal preference and according to the breed standards. It should be done before they are 4 days old and is not traumatic at all. Just make sure that a professional does it if you have it done.

It isnt mean. It is done when they are 3 days old at latest, before they even have nerves in the ends of their tails.
i dont suggest you do it yourself until you have seen someone do it before.
You can have a vet do it for relatively cheap.
You just use wire cutters and snip it off make sure you leave a stub left though!!! they will need something to wag later on!!!
good luck and congrats on your puppies

I really hate the US custom of cutting up and maiming animals because some sociopath decided a long time ago that the animal looked better that way.
When a baby is born do we say, "Cut a little off it's butt, trim it's ears, and cut off the first joint on all it's digits."

do it on the 3rd day and what you do is cut the skin longer than the 3rd vertibrae then pull the skin back and cut the tail between the 3 and 4th vertibrea and put some antiseptic and alum on it . this is cartilage like material and soft still. they dont feel it like you think they do... they holler because you are holding them still to hard.

Why would you want to? It's done when there really young and i think there cuter with them, my Cocker-Spaniels don't have there tails cut and they are the cutest things ever. I think it's cruel to dock them.
