For the 4.0L that is either completely normal or you have a bad thermostat.

Most 4.0L won't go to the 'halfway' point. My 4.0L would hardly ever get past 1/4. But that was normal. When it never reached C was when I had issues. My thermostat was bad.

Have the temperature checked by a reputable mechanic, it's it's running around 190 degrees, you are fine. If not, they can replace the thermostat. And even then, it still won't go 'halfway'.

And I wouldn't replace it. If you continue to have doubts about the operation, find a used 2000 Explorer or 2000 Supercab Ranger and test drive it. You'll find the same conditions exist. If they don't, then see about changing your sensor and maybe even your instrument cluster. But I honestly think that would be a waste of time and money.

Ok the most common cause is the thermostat in those. But to verify use a scan tool to look at the engine temperature and match it with the guage if they are the same or close change the thermostat with one from the dealer this is important in that type of vehicle.

If the temp readings are not too close the temp sender for the temp gusge is likely bad or there is corrosion in the electrical wiring.
Merry Christmas.

This is normal for these engines. I have owned 4 different Ford SUVs and they all ran on the lower side of the gauge. If the gauge shows the engine cold when you first start it and it rises to a point and stops then all is well. the thermostats in these engines are very precise. The ecm has a slight delay in sending signals to the gauge as well that may be hiding the slight rise in temp prior to the stat opening and slight drop after it opens.

No, this is not normal. I have a 98 explorer with the 4.0 My needle sat in the lower region and had lousy heat. I put in a new 180 degree thermostat and now it sits at the bottom of the temp picture which is about halfway up and the heat is super hot. Change your thermostat, you will see.

You probably have a 185 degree or defective thermostat, replace it with a new 200 degree one.

i think you will find that the body lines are going to be a bit different making it really hard to line up without alot of modification.
