We are taking care of a friend's dog because our family friend is on vacation. The dog is kept in the garage, but she won't pee in the litter box. She'll only excrete wastes outside in the backyard. Help!

It may be a hassle, but better than inside your home or on your floor of the garage.

If the dog is not at home it might be confused about going in the litter box as it is not in the "right place". If the dog wants to go in the yard I say all the better. If you want to spend time with the dog then praise the dog when it goes by the litter box and let it know it is the box itself not the location that makes it OK for the dog to go in it.

The dog is probably doing what it was trained to do: go to the bathroom outside. Dogs are generally very clean and do not want to get their "den" dirty. If she is not litterbox trained and you are expecting her to do so, you are just confusing her.
If she is trained to do both, and there are dogs which are, she may be confused or uncomfortable in the current environment. Not all dogs adapt to change well; it's a matter of their personality.
Also, if she is litterbox trained, make sure you are using the same type of litter or newspaper and the same litterbox that she is accustomed to.

Litter boxes only work well with cats. The best way to house brake a puppy, is to buy or rent a dog cage, large enough for it to sleep and eat in. Put it on plastic if in the house, and line it everyday with clean torn up news paper, because puppy will pee ther until he feels it is his place to sleep & eat. Almost all dogs do not like to excreat where they eat & sleep. Once it realizes that place is the cage, it will bark like crazy to get out when it has to go....Let it out side at once! It will associate the cage with being indoors and will want to always go outside to do it's duty.
You must be consistent....It's not fun in the begining, but it always works out in the end, and when it does you won't need the cage any longer. Good Luck!

Perhaps you're confusing the dog with a cat. Cats use litterboxes. Dogs go outside.

I would suggest finding someone else to look after this dog. You seem to be missing some fundamental knowledge about the species.

Litter boxes are for cats. Dogs usually go on newspaper or outside.

Fist off, a dog naturally goes to the bathroom outside!!!! It is all they know how to do.. Cats are litter -boxed trained, dogs are not. Anyway, you probably don't have to watch this dog for much longer, I bet. Just get a plastic bag, and a pooper-scooper, and clean up what the dog does, he can't help it!!!!!!

CATS GO IN A LITTER BOX NOT DOGS!!!

Take her outside, if you are not able to do that as much as you need to try to put down some newspapers.

Chances are your friend's dog is housebroken. Trained only to pee and poop outside in the yard. Take the dog outside to go to the bathroom regularly (every 4 hours or so). Don't try to mess
with it's training or your friend's are going to be very upset.
When you take her out to go to the bathroom, take a plastic bag with you and a small scoop. Scoop the poop into the bag and
drop it in a trash can.
My dogs are all trained this way. I have 5. I leave them with friends too, when I go away for the holidays. I wouldn't want my friend's retraining my dogs. It takes too long to housetrain them, as it is.If they tried to retrain my dog, I'd get very upset with them
and probably wouldn't talk to them for a long time.

As most people said, dogs don't go in the litter box.

HOWEVER if for some reason you need him to go there, show him that's where he needs to go by leaving paper he's peed on in the litter box, so he can smell that's where he's supposed to go.

That's how you teach CATS how to use it.

This is a dog, not a cat. Dogs don't use literboxes usually, I am sorry to break the news. A normal dog needs to be taken for a walk to pee!
