just so you know, Catholics who have other statues in their homes (besides nativity scenes) do NOT worship them. We have them as a reminder to think of God, but we certainly don't pray to them.

Good point. No one mentioned exodus when God was instructing Moses how to build the temple. God told him to embroider angels onto the curtains, and make angel(cherubim) statues at the alter...hmmm.
by the way, catholics do not bow down or worship the statues.

The Bible preaches against "idolatry", not statues. Idolatry is simply deifying something other than God, perhaps even worshipping the thing to which your deifying. In Biblical times people often made statues of false Gods, perhaps here is where the confusion exists. There is nothing biblically wrong with statues however (most people believe Michaelangelo had a strong Christian faith and he created some of the most awe inspiring sculptures ever). God doesn't mind symbols (the cross, the icthus (you know, the fish) and of course the nativity), He just doesn't want you worshipping any idol over Him.

Wrong to have statues? It's wrong to worship images- but wrong to have them?
Nativity scenes are statues?? I always thought they were figures of a historical fact depicting the birth of the Lord Jesus and the scenes were honoring that occasion.

Yes, a nativity scene is certainly made up of graven images. Therefore clearly the Bible does not forbid the making or having of such images, but only the idolization of them, that is, the worship of them instead of God.

But people don't bow down to worship them! And no, I never had the money to get the nativity scene! What's the point if I can use my imagination?

I have the cutest nativity scene. It is Little People. It's adorable. I also have a glow in the dark Jesus.

I'm not Christian, though. I just thought the nativity scene was cute and I've had the Jesus since I was a kid.

God draws a clear distinction between idols and mere statues.

Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments."

Here, God tells us we cannot make a statue AND THEN WORSHIP IT in place of worshipping Him.

Peace.

I think some of you should really think your questions out before asking them. Allot of people ask questions in this forum with the soul purpose of condemning someones beliefs when in all actuality you do not have all the facts. Why don't you say," Is it wrong to have statues?"

Then give people of spirituality and religion the opportunity to say... We have a cross in our church but we do not refer to it as our God, we also have Angels in our church but we do not kneel down and pray to them. It is OK to have a statue but it is not okay to pray to it, idolize it, and worship it as God!

No. See Lev 12:4 " Do not turn to idols or make gods of cast metal for yourselves. I am the LORD your God." NIV

Just don't make idols or worship them. Idols include statues but are not limited to statues.

Nativity sets, Christmas trees, wreaths on the doors - I don't understand your point. Maybe understanding the purpose of the "statues" in the home would help us better understand your question?
