I just had my Toyota 2wd tacoma 4cylinder muffler replaced from the catalyic converter BACK for 400$ and it sounds ike hell when its around 40MPH and then again at 60-65 it vibratres all to hell and howls like its a musical instrumnt almost like on 2 octaves ..or when you rub your finger on a wet glass it gets that tone ..! SInce this is a matter of opinion what course do i have to get the mechanic to replace it with a better one? My original muffler was obviously great! it sounded ike a car! now it sounds like a tank but i know the mechanic will say its fine the JERK! what can i do ?

For $400 I would be back there and tell him to test drive it himself. What kind of muffler did he put on? A performance muffler which will be louder in the cab due to resonance of the sound through the bed of the truck. Or did he put on some cheap pos that is causing unwanted restriction and the howl? When I did the catback on my Dakota I left the pipes a bit shorter then the factory. The sound resonance under the bed made conversation in the cab, at speed, almost impossible. I put 45 degree extensions on the ends to get the exhaust noise out from under the bed and bida boom, bida bang.. now just a deep rumble. I would be back there and demand a $400 exhaust job so I could drive my vehicle in peace. Good luck and don't take crap.. It was your hard earned money he needs to make sure you are satisfied.

Absolutely nothing but buy a completely different muffler to put on it. If you liked it sounding like a car, why would you put a cat-back system on when they generally have either a loud whine or annoying rumble?
You see, the mechanic only did what you told him to do. You had a perfectly good muffler and you asked him to install an aftermarket one that is noisy.
Not only that, you didn't tell the mechanic what your tastes were as far as muffler sounds go, or ask his advise on what should be installed to fit your taste. You told him what you wanted to install and he provided that service for you.
What's going on with your 'muffler' isn't his fault. You have only yourself to blame for what you are experiencing. Your idea, your purchase; you eat it. Chaulk it up to a $400 real life lesson learned in getting what you pay for and being uninformed about what you are getting.
The smart thing to do is to let the installer know what you don't like about what was installed, see if there is anything he can do at YOUR cost to improve the install, and/or ask him to recommend and install a cat-back system that better fits your tastes...also at YOUR cost.
In the meantime, visit your local Toyota dealer and ask what they recommend or what is offered for your Taco. You should be more pleased if something is offered because it would be something authorized by Toyota.
The next thing to do is find a Taco forum online and read up on what other folks have installed to find out what does and doesn't work for your tastes.
I don't mean to be so harsh in my comments, but you can't call a guy a Jerk for something he hasn't done yet, or for him doing something that you've asked him to do.

sounds like you may have a few exhaust leaks... this would be where the guy welded the sections and he didn't weld them all the way to a seal (( it's hard to see all the way around the pipe when your welding under a vehicle)). This is common. you most likely can't tell when it is at idle right? thats because there really is no back pressure at idle for the exhaust to find the small holes. so the guy sent you on your way. when you go down the road there is more back pressure and the exhaust leaks where the welds didn't get. take it back and they should gladly do a once over everywhere he welded... hope this helps

Install a genuine Toyota exhaust system. If it was good on the truck before why not now? Also, if you purchase and have installed at the dealer you will have a lifetime warranty. PARTS & LABOR! You will never have to worry about it again.

Unless the system is defective or was installed improperly there's little that you can do except replace it again at your own expense.
It might be possible to add a resonator to the system to cut down on the noise but again that's going to be at your own expense. That would be less than a complete re-fit of course.

i own a shop,and id have the original type put back on it,,id take it to them they was responsible for it since you didn't want it to sound like this,,they just used a cheap muffler on it,,that's whats causing it to sound like this,,i went through the same thing with my s-10,,i made them replace it,,now it sounds like a normal vehicle,should,,good luck hope you get it fixed,,have a good x-mas.

If it costs you $50 to re-install the old system, do it, it's your truck after all and not the mechanic's, RIGHT!!!!!
You can probably get some KID to buy the new system.

sounds like a leak. Get under the truck and look for pipe seams that loose.
