I believe the Garden of Eden story is a parable, and that the Tree of Life is Jesus, Himself. The Sword that protects the way is God's Word...what we know as The Bible, although I think there is much more that got left out (and maybe some stuff put in that shouldn't have been...)
But most Christians won't agree with me.

We need not conclude that our Creator was the first one to make what we know as swords. By the time Moses wrote the book of Genesis, swords were well-known and used in warfare. (Genesis 31:26; 34:26; 48:22; Exodus 5:21; 17:13) As above answers state, the others were not yet invented by man.

The swords are the Cherubims swords. The sword is representative of God's word, for this reason it quite is a flaming sword. those swords come from the Cherubim in heaven. it quite is written "And He shall smite the earth with the word of His mouth, and with the breathe of His lips shall He wreck the ungodly." Isaiah eleven:4 "The Sword of the Spirit, it relatively is the word of God" Ephesians 6:17 "The Lord will consume with the breathe of His mouth" 2 Thessalonians 2:8 "His call, the word of God" Revelation 19:thirteen "And out of His mouth proceeds a pointy double-edged sword, so as that with it He ought to strike the international locations" Revelation 19:15 "For the word of God resides and helpful and sharper previous evey 2-edged sword and piercing as far through fact the branch of the two soul and spirit" Hebrews 4:12

Rules of engagement. It's a proximity thing. An angel with an AK-47 might think Adam was making a break for the garden and blow him away at like 50 yards when really Adam was just yawning or something like that. It was really a smart move on Gods part.

Well, at least the sword is on fire and turns every which way. Still, if a crowd of people make a break for the garden of Eden at once, it can't get them all.......

Swords werent invented either.

We are talking about the first humans on the planet aren't we?

Good question why not a Geo-Thermal Nuclear Missile or a good Biological weapon of mass destruction.

Why did God make it possible to make these machines of death? Oh sorry it's the work of the Devil

Why did God make the devil? Why does he allow him to exist?

It's all a load of nonsense created to control people through their fear of mortality please people its the 21st century!!!!!!!!!

well, He did, but as we were not capable of understanding concepts like that 1900 years ago, He changed it (via his ghostwriters) to say "sword". Only just now are we wise enough to decipher what the Bible really means, through our well-guided edits and pruning of the ancient texts. Also we need to change Genesis so it works out with evolution.
