All breeds have their good and their bad just like human families. Just cause the majority are smart the rest may not be.

I have had several breeds of dogs and although I loved each dog I never fell in love with a breed until I met and then got my first Labrador Retriever. They are the smartest, most versatile, loving, loyal, affectionate, dedicated dog you will ever find. There is no doubt why they are the number one used service dog as well as the number one breed in the U.S and England. They are the best temperment and love everyone and everything. My nephews adore my Lab, and there is nothing they do not do with him. In the summer they go swimming together, hiking, camping and play ball. In the winter they are always sledding and having snowball wars together. My Lab just loves it. My Lab is only a year and a half and knows over 75 words and commands and he was the easiest dog to train. I would never have another breed, they are the best.

If you are really looking for the smartest breed dog then you should get a poodle. I know they aren't manly dogs, but they have been proven to be the smartest breed. If you don't want to say you have a poodle, then consider getting a labradoodle. (a lab and poodle mix) The reason they chose to mix these two breeds is because poodles are the smartest and labs are the sweetest. With this mix you will get a extremely smart dog that is great with kids and is very sweet. My mom has a labradoodle and he is so smart he became a therapy dog. She also works at a pre-school and takes him in to see the kids every Friday. He is a very great dog to have.

We have a Border Collie puppy and she has gotten on well with our young children (even tho this breed is often discouraged for families with young ones). They are a wonderful breed, very intelligent and learn so fast, but they are not the breed for everyone. They really do require a big commitment from their owners, more than some other breeds. So if you consider this one, keep that in mind.

They can get bored easily and they will often find something to entertain themselves, which can often result in destructive behavior.

They need more than just the daily walk. BC's need to be stimulated mentally as well as physically and they have a HIGH activity level. We are persuing agility, obedience and possibly herding training with ours to keep her a happy dog. So evaluate your families activity level if you do consider this breed as it's not a good one for a somewhat inactive lifestyle.

They are protective of their family and aren't excessive barkers.

They can be obessesive and persistent. Mine will bring that toy back 100 times over and she won't give up either!

They don't do well if you need to leave a dog alone for a full work day. Again, it's that getting bored thing. My husband works days, I work evenings, so someone is almost always home with ours.

They WILL attempt to "herd" your children, so making sure your kids know how to handle this is a good idea.

They are wonderful dogs, but if you do consider this breed, I highly suggest persuing some kind of dog sport, like agility, flyball, frisbee and/or obedience competitions. They excel at these sports and are really happy to do them!

Good luck finding the right breed for your family!

SMART dogs are not neccisarily good with kids - Border Collies and Jack Russell Terriers are probably two of the Smartest dogs HOWEVER any intelligent dog requires ALOT of mental simulation or they easily become bored and destructive...they will constantly try to "read" the kids for signals.. and this can spell disaster..
if your kids are young you will not have the time and energy to devote to a smart breed of dog... you simply cannot do it.. these dogs are the MOST returned dogs becuase people get them not realizing how INTENSE these dogs are....

ok best breed for people with kids (I wish you had said their ages) is a SOFT MOUTHED BREED- this would be the Retrievers.. goldens etc...
these dogs were bred to be patient and gentle and they are...

if your kids are young (under 6) I do NOT recommend a puppy.. puppies are VERY destructive and will chew your kid and your kids toys PLUS housetraining a puppy is hard work and if you have kids it will be really hard (you have to go out with the puppy EVERY time to train it potty becuase you have to be out and reward it instantly)

an adult dog who has been with kids is your better option
check your local shelters first or call your vet...

NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store - they will tell you ANYTHING to get a sale and you will find the lowest quality animals at the highest prices PLUS contribute to the cruel industry of puppy mills... breeding soley for profit and nothing else

Terriers were bred to hunt and kill so are VERY mouth agressive and should be avoided

have you considered a mutt from your local shelter?? the staff will know which are better with kids... check them first

There are a lot of factor besides being smart and good with kids- and dumb dogs are easier to train. You need to look at what your life style is and what type of maintenance you want. One of my favorite breeds, that is fantastic with children, other animals etc is a Border Terrier. And i repeat, a Border Terrier (not a Border collie). These are on the smaller side, (13-18 lbs) but are healthy, rugged dogs with fantastic temperments- and one of the few breeds I can recommend to anyone without knowing a lot about your life style. Tell me more about your life style and I can provide better advice.
In regards to another answer posted: Golden Retrievers are decent dogs, but they are high enerygy, avid chewers and the temperments are not what they use to be. Unforunately, we are starting to see more shy or nippy goldens.
Also, keep in mind that this is not the best time to get a dog. Always wait until after the holidays.

Every one here is going to tell the breed of dog they have is the best dog for kids, well a lot of them are wrong. You need to research the many different breeds and make an educated decision on what you think is the best breed for you and your families lifesyle. AKC has a web site with descriptions of all recognized breeds of dog. AKC.org You could also read a few books like Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, or Idiots Guide to Chosing, Buying and Raising a Dog.

If properly trained and embraced as a beloved member of the family, any breed can make a great pet. With that said, some dogs are seen as more “kid-friendly” than others and, as a result, have become extremely popular among families. According to the AKC, the five most popular breeds in the United States are:

Labrador Retrievers are by far America’s most popular dog—more than 140,000 Lab puppies were registered last year with the AKC—and have a reputation for being playful, hardworking and affectionate toward children. The Lab is easily trained and is highly respected for his prowess at many jobs: as a guide dog for the disabled, a search-and-rescue dog, and for narcotics detection.

Golden Retrievers are sporty, easy to train and strong, but their most outstanding trait is character. They are outgoing and devoted companions to people of all ages, happy and trusting. They make great hunting companions, too.

German Shepherd are noble in appearence and character. This breed's courage, steadfast heart, and keen senses have endeared him to families for generations. Active and outdoorsy, German Shepherds are very fond of children and make wonderful companions.

Beagles love being around people and other animals. They are gentle, happy companions who thrive on affection and attention. They are also clever, quick, and, most of all curious. They need plenty of active exercise.

Dachshund has a lively, upbeat personality—spunky, curious and friendly. Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshund’s love to dig, romp and run. They are affectionate, especially with children, and enjoy going for walks and other forms of exercise

You should do your research before you bring any animal into your home. A lot of small breeds are not good for very young kids and once you get a dog never leave dog and children alone unattended. A dog your is a responsiblity for the rest of its life and should not be bought on impulse.

It depends on the age of the children, but I have two suggestions for you. The Springer Spaniel makes a wonderful companion and family pet. However, due to their long hair, they require a little more maintenance.

Another choice would be a Vizsla. A beautiful short haired, very intelligent dog that is very trainable and eager to please. They love attention and want to be where ever you are. They can be a little energetic as puppies (as they all can) and may require more exercise (if your dog is to fat, your not getting enough exercise).

Both wonderful breeds, I prefer the lower maintenance Vizsla. They make great hunting dogs in the morning, then come home and play with the grand kids in the afternoon.

Golden Retrievers probably are one of the smartest. They are so adorable too. They are the dog that will always stick with its family and are incredible loyal.
They are excellent with children and wouldn't harm anything. They are on the larger end of the scale and take a lot of looking after. Daily grooming is essential to keep their golden coat in good condition, they need a lot of long walks and exercise so they dont become bored and start to destroy the house, especially when they are pups.
Hope this helps.
and have a Happy Christmas!!

Any dog CAN be good with children, albeit some are by nature extra-rowdy.
Smart, intelligent, love-to-please dogs:
Golden Retriever, although not a great family dog unless you want a working dog and a bundle of energy.
Labrador Retriever-same as above
Australian Shepherd-only if you live on lots of land with room to roam
Border Collie-same as above

A great family dog that IS smart, good with children, and very loving:
English Setter
Cocker Spaniel
English Springer Spaniel
Poodle-albeit WITH room to play and exercise, as they are still sporting dogs at heart.

The Greyhound is the best breed. Plus they generaly eat cats! Some do not have interst in them. but, i like the kind that eat them.
They are fun dogs to sport with and at home they are giant couch potatoes. I have fostered 9 geyhounds in the past it has been the most fulfilling breed of dog. i currently own 1 greyhound that has been the best breed i have ever own. We have 3 children ages 10, 9 and 6 raised with greyhounds and the grey we have is great with small dogs too. we have a dreaded poodle mix and chihuahua. i can say honestly that the greyhound is best!
