Did we WIN the war in IRAQ?

If we pulled out of iraq 100% could we consider the progress we made a victory? We got rid of saddam and now the country is in a civil War not much concerned with the US well except for the ones that are there. Just interested in what the general public things.

No. But truthfully things aren't that black and white anymore, as we can't say we Lost. The only way we could "Win" a war in Iraq is to occupy the country and install a dictatorship, and how would that align with our Democratic government.

In a nutshell, there is no way we could "Win" without violating our democratic principles or flat out nuking the country.

Well, if we pulled out now, our goal would not be accomplished. Yes we got Saddam out of power, but we have not stabilized Iraq yet. I feel that once their government can stand on it's own, and can stabilize the country on it's own, we will have won. I feel we will win, people are upset because the war is taking a little longer than expected. Everyone was thinking it would be short like the last time we were there. I truly hope we win over there, it would be pretty sad for the most powerful country in the world to lose to a third world country.

Depends what you consider to be the goal of the Iraq war. We went in there because Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. So we went in there and captured Saddam. But we found no weapons of mass destruction and no link between him and Al-Qaeda (sp?), except for their hatred of America.

If the goal of the Iraq war was to spread democracy into Iraq, then we lost. Although we did set up a democratic government, Iraq is now in a civil war and different factions are fighting for control of the country.

Overall, if you look at Iraq as a whole, we lost. Iraq is in a worse state now than it was before, and there's not much now we can do about it.

We won a stunning war of the third-generation type in Iraq, toppling Saddam's Ba'thists. Stop. End of story.
We have troops in Iraq for a combination of reasons: nation-building, peace-keeping and counter-insurgency/"war on terror" activity. A stable, secular Iraqi government based on democratic principles and assuring protections to the various ethnic/religious groups is a laudable one, and the strategic implications in terms of improving stability not just in Iraq but in the entire region are obvious.
If one were a terrorist, the situation in Iraq would be favorable. Using minimal forces in Phase I and Phase II operations, if you have a translation of Mao's little red book, a direct attack can be made on the political will of the American people using the secular infighting (or civil war, if you must) to magnify one's apparent power.
If one is a sectarian opportunist, the terrorist activity may sometimes mask one's own push to fill a portion of the power vacuum in the formation of the new government and grab political advantage, even if opposing the views of the terrorists.
Confusing, difficult, but not impossible, and the goal is so dazzling that high risks seem reasonable bets.

Who do you think will be able to last longer fighting this war in Iraq. The overworked, overstretched Armed Forces, or islamic extremists and insurgents? Who do you think has more resolve in acheiving their goal?

It is pretty clear that the people of Iraq will not let us win this war. They are still holding a grudge from years of fighting and oppression between the shiite and sunni sects, and now that we "liberated" them they are free to slaughter each other without regards to law or consequence. But then maybe I'm just too pessimistic make up your own mind. Who really knows what will happen, hell they could straighten up if we stayed there for 10 years or so. Maybe.

We won the war. There is no doubt of this. The ultimate goal was to remove Saddam Hussein from power. This goal was accomplished with precision and efficiency. It is the peace which has been difficult. However contrary to what some may believe we have not lost that either.

The war in Iraq is a lose lose situation for everyone.

The Iraquis lose because their families and homes have been torn apart and they live in fear and uncertainty.

The Americans lose because less forutnate families are losing their children to a war that most of America doesn't support because they were lied to about the reasons for attack.

The best solution is to get out of Iraq and save what ever can be salvaged of the lives that remain.

No we didn't win the war. Well, YOU didn't win the war. And as for why US is still there, is because they stirred the problem and it's taking THAT long to stabelize it. Don't forget too that war is a game. And I say this from experience, not knowlege. They're still in Iraq because this way, it'll keep them occupied down there instead of having them come down and cause problems in the states itself

well... i think bush's ultamate goal was to get ride of saddam. so in 1 way he would call it a victory. but if we leave iraq then this civil war will go on until it probaly goes back to the old ways they had it. i dont really concider this conflict a victory because for how little you hear about it. there seems to be alot of soldiers dieing. you dont win wars or conflicts by dieing. you win them by making your enemy die. in this case its harder to identify the enemy

If we leave now, we will be RUNNING AWAY. The liberals want us to be cowards and run away. We need to stay there until the job is done. Wars have lasted far longer than this before!
