What's your diet like?

You are not getting enough of the nutrients your body needs. Your fingernails are a sign of this.

You need to get more calcium, silicon and phosphorous into your diet. Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt) and vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts will provide calcium.

If you are not into modifying your diet, go to HSN.com and look under Andrew Lessman. He makes excellent vitamins. He has a product called "Hair ,skin and nails". It will really make a difference you can see.

This is a no-risk way to grow your fingernails; because, if you are not happy with your results, you have 30 days to return the product for a refund. HSN is very good about this.

Good luck, Honey.

Nails, hair, and skin benefit from a similar set of vitamins that are possible, but not easy, to find in food in quantities large enough to promote their growth. Also, depending on your age, much of your body's calcium and vitamin resources may be directed toward bone growth (frequent growth spurts kept my nails from growing very rapidly until I was about 20!).

Your best bet, regardless of your age, is to take a multivitamin especially geared toward hair, skin, and nails. There is actually a dietary supplement by that exact name. A good supplement will include Calcium (citrate, not carbonate), Vitamin D (for calcium absorbtion), Zinc, Niacin, Biotin, the range of B-vitamins, and will promote the growth of proteins like Keratin.

I recommend going with a popular brand like Centrum, so that you can benefit from consumer research and you can be assured that you're not ingesting some product no one's ever heard of. I'm on a grad school budget right now, and actually get all the nail/skin/hair vitamins I need from two regular Centrum multivitamins per day, plus a calcium supplement (that people should take to prevent osteoporosis anyway).

Another issue, however, is that your nails may just be brittle and chip often, and the dietary supplements will aid that. Just remember, the nails you see right now are dead cells and are not benefitting from the vitamins you'll take. So you need to protect the nails you currently have with a coat of clear polish (I like Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails). And when you do paint your nails and remove polish, be SURE to use a nail polish remover labeled "Acetone FREE" -- as acetone, a staple ingredient in manicure shops, absolutely kills nails. Curel has a great brand of nail polish remover that is gentle and has gelatin.

Hope that helped!

Diet, so drink lots of milk. If lactose intolerant, double up on your source for calcium. My rule of thumb. I have to cut my fingernail on my thumb once a week. Compare with family and friends to see if your nails are growing at a snail's pace.
