We forgot to give our dog his December heartworm pill. I thought my husband did it, he thought I did it...we need to work on our communication.

But will my dog be okay? He seems the same as usual, but I didn't think you could see heartworm symptoms until they're really bad.

We live in Illinois...it's been between 30-50 degrees all month.

Just to reassure you all. The pill works retro one month..not forward. If you give him Dec medication now he'll be just fine. Just remember its actually covering the month prior to the day you give it to them. Hope this helps.

If it was due on the first of December but he has otherwise been taking them regularly, he should be okay to go ahead and take it- it's still December- and then give the next one at the same time in January. (like if you give him a tablet on Dec. 20, then next one Jan. 20)
If it has been a year since your dog had a heartworm check, it would be good to get one before resuming the medication. Heartworm medicine can make a dog very ill if they have heartworms but if you have been regular all year so far, your dog will be fine.
One reason Vets have people do yearly checks is because some stop giving heartworm medicine in the winter months thinking the dogs don't need it because there aren't any mosquitoes around and then because a dog got exposed in September, there is no prevention in colder months to keep them from developing.

well since teh temps have been very low where you are i would say the chances of your dog getting heartworm is pretty slim...any mosquitos would be dead by now...but still chance of tehre being some fleas he could come in contact with from other dogs or ones that have managed to stay within ur home...but you can never be to sure and to be safe i would go to teh vet and get a blodd test done...if your dog does have heartworm and u give him the pill the results could be fatal...my dog had heartworm and we had it treated but it was a long haul...very scary experience...not trying to scare you but just be very careful...

If you are really worried take your dog to a vet for a blood test. Missing one dose will probably not cause your dog to be infected.

He will be fine. Go ahead and give him the pill now and then the next one January 22nd, then Feb 22nd, etc.
