Ruptured anal gland?

I have to express my dog's anal glands every few weeks (and bathe him because of it, which I hate doing so frequently). Otherwise, he'll scoot his butt on the floor of leave a nasty anal gland mess on the carpet.

I was reading past questions about this, and someone mentioned that people can rupture their dog's anal glands while expressing them, and that it's a bad thing.

How do I know if I've ruptured my dog's anal glands? What method for expressing the glands is best to make sure I don't do this?

Anal glands can be ruptured, my best advice is to discuss this situation with your vet as he/she can give you more information with regard to this.
