The 2 major prog used for this purpose are Winrar and Winzip which can be downladed from:
http://www.download.com
However, if ur using Windows XP, it is an integrated utility:
You simply right click a file or a folder and choose Send to > compressed (zipped) file from the pop up menu.
A new compressed file will be created instantly in the same location.

The one thing that everyone out there assumed was that you were running on a Windows/Mac platform. In general, the public answered correctly. But on UNIX type servers, you can use a combination of tar and compress, gzip to get you going. tar will create an uncompressed concatenation of the files you want to store. compress and gzip will do the actual compression for you. And of course there are others out there as well.

What kinds of files? you can compress folders with windows or with like winzip or winrar. You can compress video files with a video codec like divx. You can compress files and folders in windows by right clicking on the file or folder and going to properties, and selecting compress..

if u r using win xp , right click on folder u wish to zip, then choose to cmpress, or u can download winzip which is the best zipping program at all

Win XP
Win zip
Winrar
But I really like TUGzip and there are more. FYI they really don't compress all that much....not like you would think anyway.

right click on whatever you want to compress, click send too... and then click compressed folder
then get rid of the duplicate and keep the compressed one
