The design is a matter of function. The pointy part is due to aerodynamics and the holes are meant to provide cooling and ventilation for the head since cycling is a "sweatier" sport than snowboarding would be. Most "normal" looking helmets would be too hot when used in a cycling situation. You can get away with a "normal" looking helmet in BMX because it is a short duration event.

So what is the definition of "normal?" Is that kinda like asking, "Why are cowboy hats all big and floppy instead of being normal like a baseball hat?"

Other helmets do not provide what a bicycle helmet does. A BMX helmet does not vent well, is not aerodynamic, and is heavy. No other helmet design will be light enough to wear comfortably and channel air flow across your head while still protecting you from impact and punctures.

Marketing tool. The bigger helmet comps. test their stuff in big named events like the Tour de France, Ironman etc. They get feed back from the riders as to comfort, cooling, styling etc. Companies also sponsor these teams or individuals so they get exposure as a marketing tool. Lot of these helmets must meet a industry standard for safety. Cycling helmets roots did not start out as "hard shell" type head wear. They had a padded hairnet type look. Snow and skateboarding had a different crowd of individuals. Someone just needed a different look to fit in with the type of sport they are targeting. Again it's a marketing tool that has to be functional and be safe for the wearer.
It depends when and where you were as helmet design came about. Hard shell cycling helmets started about in the early '80's. Snowboarding helmets started when... late '90's. Hope this helps.

Aerodynamics. Those points help road cyclist slip through air faster, allowing for faster speeds. Since other sports aren't as concerned with speed, their helmets can look a bit more "normal". And as a cyclist, your coment is a bit offensive.

Fashion / style / marketing, just like snowboard pants and t-shirts and stickers and tattoos.

Sure, they claim aerodynamics, and the venting helps on a hot day, but really, 99% of the riders never go fast enough that the aero effect of their helmet is even measureable.
