All I find here is: my belief is this, your belief is that, I/We are so great, you are a piece of ****. Can we stop this point scoring and get down to really understanding each others ideas and beliefs for a change? Those that do ask honest questions or give an honest reply get drowned out by the point scorers.

Amen, sibling, amen! Would LOVE to be able to prowl around here, asking about beliefs/customs of others (in honest ignorance) & sharing the info/beliefs I've got. Yahoo Answers could be SUCH a great place for data exchange.

But there's so many "True Believers" of _all types_ who simply will hold onto the concept that *their* particular tenets are the One and Only Way, and _therefore_, the best way to win others over is to vilify opposing beliefs.

Not to mention, the problems with hatemongering trolls whose major joy in life is to provoke dissent and anger.

(RAMO---Report abuse, move on---let's regain control of the boards, folks! When you see a really inflammatory question, take a minute to check the poster's q/a profile before replying. A troll's pattern is usually pretty obvious----and if it looks like trolling, just RAMO silently. Beware that a comment may leave you open to a retaliation---just got 2 violations for "insulting" for putting up "please don't feed troll" signs.)

But let's get back to the purpose of Y/A---information sharing. Happy holidays, everyone, and here's to a good and prosperous new year to y'all!

I think you ask a valid question. Unfortunately, many of the people using this forum are young and/or ignorant and are trying very hard to validate themselves and raise their esteem. Many of them do so by putting others down, which is a shame. In this forum, there are no consequences for these actions, so there really isn't anything you can do except ignore them or go find something else to do. I try to answer people's questions honestly and fairly, with some success, though I am far from perfect. On the whole, I enjoy reading the answers. The ones that are obviously ignorant or prejudiced, I just let them slide... unless I'm feeling argumentative. ;-)

If I were you, I'd keep asking good questions like this, and set a good example. Then you will have played your part in making this forum a better place for everyone!

If people only asked questions such as "How do I fix the water pump on my '96 Mustang" or "My foot turned purple and then started oozing puss and then fell off. What should I do?"(geez, has anyone here ever hear of a doctor?) there would be no problem. But once you bring politics or religion in to your question, well, you're just asking for debate. And of course, a lot of questions aren't questions at all but more like statments. such as "Do you think Bush is an idiot too?" or "Why do muslims want to kill people?" . "Questions" like these tend to stir passions in people, and with good reasons. But really, what's the problem? I see nothing wrong with having a good debate about something. But I do agree the name calling is going a little far, and besides, you're never going to convince anybody of the wisdom of your argument if you start calling them names.

I for one do not get involved in name calling.
Those Christians that do, are suspect to me.

The closest I get to that is to say that those who call themselves Christians and use rude and foul language, are probably not born again, or they are newborn.

I do my best to get my point across with Biblical proof when necessary, and practical experience where it does not relate to the Bible.

I would hope that would spread to others, but I am not sure it will.
I have said before I think we are involved in SPIRITUAL WARFARE in this forum.

Much of the problem to me seems to come to those who believe in nothing and think we should also. They do a lot of foul name calling. I do for one don't expect that to stop.

The scriptures tell us that there will be a falling away before Jesus returns, and I suspect that we are seeing the falling away on this forum.

For cthemagicofdawn, I do not expect you to agree with everything said, but you should accept that this is their belief and move on. Don't change what you know is right because someone believes something else.

Hey
Well not everyone's doing the whole point scoring thing or abuse thing. Speaking for myself - When I give an answer it's genuine and it's because I have something to share. You'll find others like me here but we're hard to see... :)

As long as Christianity, as well as several of the other "ultimate truths", have as their end and gleefully sought after goal, the END OF THE WORLD, and as long as they believe that their rights are being violated if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their god down every ones throat, you will have to put up with us being in your face. Why should we abandon a forum where we can let you know that you will not be allowed to carry out the silly "End Times" rubbish that you seem to forget would include the rest of us.

That wouldn't be any fun! Just discussing ideas? Sounds like you are trying to improve yourself and learn something... did you think that was what a place called "Answers" was for? Silly you!!!

LOL!!!

Seriously: good point. The internet gives a sense of anonymity that makes people tend to be more rude if they are inclined to be rude in the first place.

That would be nice, but there does seem to be something in human nature and many of our religions to promote the "I'm right you're wrong, so burn in hell" philosophy.

I share your frustration and wish that more civil dialogue could take place. I just don't think that most simple internet forums are the place for it.

No, because there is right and wrong and good and evil. Unfortunately, everyone thinks they are right and that we should all respect and be tolerant of them, when in fact we should be turning away from their beliefs.

God Bless you and Merry Christmas.

Being associated with Jehovah's Witnesses, I VOTE YES!!! I do not believe that arguing with someone, or calling them names or using epithets against them or their beliefs are conducive to getting them to EVER listen to my point of view. The only way to even have the right to be heard is to LISTEN FIRST. That's why Jehovah gave me two ears and only one mouth... so I could listen twice as hard as I talk! LOL
