How do traveller's cheques work? Can I give them as a present or does the recipient need to sign? I want to give my brother some travellers cheques as a Christmas present for a trip he's taking in January but I just talked to my dad and he thinks the recipient has to sign for them at the bank. Is that the case?

If your brother wants to cash a traveller's cheque, it will need to have his signature on it and he will have to sign it again at the bank so they can verify the signature. If they have your signature on them, then only you can use them. In this age of debit cards, traveller's cheques aren't used very much in North America or Europe.

The person who takes out the traveller's cheque has to sign them when they are cashed. You could give you brother a money order made out to him and he can cash that at a bank wherever he is. Your dad is right, but you're a thoughtful sis!

Just a thought, but it might even be easier to give him cash in the currency of the country he will be visiting.
