No you can not swallow your tongue. What happens is the musical in your tongue relax and when someone is on there back it (the tongue) will pool in the back of the mouth blocking your airway so that breathing stops. If you could swallow your tongue, every time you stick your tongue out at some one it would fall in the floor.

NO, you cannot swallow it as its attached!
However in certain circumstances (unconsiousness for example) it can fall to the back of the mouth and block the airway causing a patient to suffocate, thats one reason why its important to place an unconscious patient in the recovery position, this makes blockage of the airway by the tongue impossible;

like evey one else has said, no, unless you actually bite it off. you NEVER want to place something in the mouth of a person seizing. If they are in a grand mal seizure they can break teeth (on what you put in there) or break what you placed in there, lock there jaw and thave all that stuff block there airway. Now like the person said above me you would use a head tilt, chin lift unless you think there is spinal problems.
In that case you would do what is called a modified jaw thrust where you lift the jaw away from the "normal" position thus pulling the toung away from the back of the throat.

No. You can however occlude your airway with your tongue if you are unconscious. This is involuntary and can lead to asphyxiation and death. In addition, disregard Pamela's answer and spelling. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THE MOUTH OF SOMEONE WHO IS HAVING A SEIZURE!! HELP THEM TO THE FLOOR AND SUPPORT THEIR HEAD. There is nothing you can do to help a seizure beside drugs, which unless your a medic, you will not have. You have to just call 911 and wait it out.

NO, your tongue is fully attached my muscles which are attached to the hyoid bone in your throat.
If you are unconscious and the musculature becomes flaccid, your tongue may fall back and block your airway, that is why we perform the "head tilt, chin lift" for unconscious persons.
