And live respectfully and do good, and eschew evil? Or would the church people say you are still going to Hell?

Do they say your God has to be as real as theirs? And how real is theirs anyway? Sometimes they say things that are extraordinarily weird, makes me wonder what is real to them and what is unreal.

Anyway, is it okay to just believe in an imaginary God? And to pursue goodness and mercy throughout your life?

Every god is imaginary. So why believe in one at all?

People believed in imaginary "gods" for thousands of years before the true God revealed Himself to the human race. Which merely demonstrates the fundamental need for God that is an inescapable part of the human condition. Man can never be fulfilled in the absence of God, and never completely fulfilled in the absence of the True God.

It would be more difficult to gain the merit of heaven but you could do it. Avoid all evil, but how could you know what to avoid if it were not for the ten commandments? and what is truly evil in the sight of God. Either way in the end you will know about God.

well, no. G-d is G-d. the argument is mainly over how people chose to worship G-d. If you create an imaginariy god, it will be based on your own self, and limited to the boundaries of your self. G-d's love is UNCONDITIONAL, without any of the baser human emotions. I don't think we can even love ourselves the way G-d does. Therefore, the god you create in your mind will only be as big as your mind and can create, while the true G-d is way bigger than that. (which allows for growth, which is good)

if you want. For me I would not waste my time on a imaginary god. I choose to go with the real God.

I don't see why not. If people are doing things that actually do get them to live a better life, I say let them go.

Hebrews 11:1-2
"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for."
it's called faith.
