The brown paper bag is probably the best way to ripen fruits at a faster rate. The bag and lack of air, causes the ethyl in the fruit to excrete. Something like that. Whatever...I know it works.

Put in a paper bag. Even faster will be to put in a paper bag with a ripe banana - the ethylene gas coming-off the banana will help the avocado ripen even faster. I think an apple works too, but not as fast as a ripe banana.

I was told to let it sit on a window sill to get exposure to the sun as the UV rays will soften it up quickly. Another trick is to put it in a brown paper bag and let it sit.
