.avi is actually a meta-format. It's an extension that encapsulates several video formats. One of them might be divx (i.e. mpeg4). If your dvd player supports divx playback, you wont have a problem, as long as your avis are actually divx.

If you want to make sure your avis are divx, download virtualdub (http://www.virtualdub.org) and view File->Information.

The basic difference is that DivX is used to compress larger video files & maintain a high level of quality. Fundamentally a DivX encoded fle can be smaller & yet contain as much video than an AVI file with no quality loss :

DivX is a video codec created by DivX, Inc. (formerly DivXNetworks, Inc.), which has become popular due to its ability to compress lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality.

Audio Video Interleave, known by its acronym AVI, is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of the Video for Windows technology.

DivX is an AVI file type, just a different codec than normal AVI.
