These days all cars a pretty much the same when it comes to reliability. Dont listen to the people that think that Japanese cars are gifts from God and therefore the best. It simply isnt true anymore. You can then focus on things such as overall price, styling, financing offers, warrantys etc. The small SUV category is huge so check sites like edmunds.com or kbb.com to see what all is available. My choice in small SUVs would probably be to wait and check out the new 08 Saturn Vue. It looks very promising. There is also the top selling Ford Escape which is due for a redesign so you may get a great deal on the current model.

That's easy.
You want a Toyota RAV4 or a Honda CR-V.
You won't find a more reliable small SUV than either of those and they both are great little trucks with car-like ride and handling and great comfort and features.
But don't take my word for it.
Check Consumer Reports New Car Buying Guide at your local bookstore. Consumers Reports is a NON-PROFIT consumer organization that accepts NO advertising so they are the only 100% honest and non biased source out there.
One look at their book and you can see exactly how reliable a Toyota RAV4 or Honda is versus a Ford Explorer or anything else. The little circles speak for themselves. If you want reliability, quality and resale value you want the Toyota or Honda model in this segment. Nothing else comes close.

If you're looking for a small, reliable SUV, you have a few choices:
Toyota RAV4
Honda CR-V
Subaru Forester
Ford Escape
Those are the best 4 in that category, in my opinion, and the lower end trims of the CR-V (LX and EX) offer the best bang for the buck- for $22,000 MSRP for a CR-V EX you get all your basics plus a sunroof, which is cheaper than what a comparable Accord at MSRP would cost. (then again, dealers are discounting more on the Accord than they are on the CR-V)
But test drive each, and see which one you like the most.
