I would say that there are at least a dozen of schools of thought that would (try to) explain what really causes these feeling but I would say that it is not really important now. What should matter to you is how to stop this way of thinking!? As it seems to be affecting your life, I suggest you find a good therapist that does CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and give it a try. You can surf on the net about it, and find out for yourself what it is but I can tell you that it is not a conventional type of psychotherapy (quackery IMO) that makes you dig out your past through 6-7 years combined with mind altering drugs they call medication. CBT is most effective without any medication and it lasts 12-20 weeks.
Whatever you do, do not take any medication like tranquilizers or antidepressants - they will only make things worse in the long run. You have developed a habit of thinking the wrong way, that is all that is to it, nothing more, nothing less. CBT will help you lose that habit.
Good luck.

It could be a panic attack or you could have an anxiety disorder.
Does Bipolar Disorder or any other anxiety related condition run in your family? It could be that or just a garden variety anxiety disorder.
You also say you're 40...it could also be that you're going through a perimenopausal phase. Women as young as 35 experience the symptoms of menopause sometimes and one of the symptoms is a nervous feeling of impending doom like you described.
I would suggest you go to the doctor, have him run blood tests and maybe give you anti anxiety medication. I would stray away from something that has to be taken everyday unless you're okay with that and go with something you can just take when you feel a phase coming on.
If you feel like your father might have done something to you and you're blocking it out, please keep in mind that once you start therapy the first few months can be absolutely horrendous and you'll feel a LOT worse before you get better. I worked in a mental health facility for years and it was so rare for someone to come in and not leave all of their appointments upset for the first few months of treatment. The human mind is a Pandora's Box...scary stuff in EVERYBODY'S head out there!!
Whenever you enter treatment if you decide to, you also need to be VERY cautious and wary of your therapist just like you would any stranger from the start. One might be better for you than another and they all have different methods of treatment. I can tell you from experience that some therapists are horrible just like some people are horrible cooks or drivers...don't be afraid to "interview" someone if you decide to go in for treatment and don't hesitate to get another therapist if you feel the first (or even the second or third) one has a conflicting personality, morals or sense of direction to yours as far as your treatment goes.
I would take the route of medication before delving into therapy though. Especially considering that if something was done to you, you were very young at the time and not to sound negative, aa regular therapist might not be able to help anyway. You could probably take one of the benzodiazapine class tranquillizers whenever you feel it coming on and be rid of your problems.
Good luck!
Hope you get a solution to your bad feelings soon!!

Anxiety causes a feeling of impending doom.
I'm not big on dredging up past memories, especially repressed ones, so forgive me for not addressing that.
I am big on seeing a psychopharmacologist and getting appropriate medication for what may in your case be a chemical imbalance. Psychiatric medications have come a long long way in the past few years, and as far as I know there's not such a stigma attached to them as there used to be. You may want to pursue this.
I believe anxiety can be either a direct problem or it can be a side problem that is caused by depression. I have both, and medication has turned my world completely on its head. I love my life now and am able to see the beauty in my children on a daily basis. I had none of that before, only darkness and negativity.
Hope this helps. Please see someone.

Sounds like High anxiety or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. My Mom has that.. she had it more when she was young, she had to check the house like 20 times before she left and would leave and go back for fear she forgot to turn something off. it then developed into her repeatedly washing her hands.. You should go to your Doctor, and they may suggest a psychologist, or Psychiatrist, medicine, or combination of them. you are normal though many people experience this and they just do not tell anyone which is self torture

It sounds like you have an anxiety disorder, which can be relieved through medication. I was recently diagnosed with severe anxiety and have been on medication for about 2 months now. Already, I feel so much better.
You should definitely go see a counselor about this before your anxiety leads to obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Good luck!

I know this may sound typical but consulting a psychiatrist will certainly help. If a traumatic childhood experience is at the core of this depression and anxiety that you have, then perhaps hypnosis and regression can help a bit. Whether it happened or not, you certainly need to move on to be at peace with yourself and psychiatrists are trained to help you do this.

You need to talk to someone about how you feel. Go see your doctor. Perhaps you could talk to your mother or other family members. Whatever you decide, you need to talk to someone.
