A virus has disabled System Restore I think. I can't open up the Help Menu from the Start button to get to the System Restore Wizard. I've tried using Safe Mode but I'm not too familiar with it. I couldn't seem to do it from there either.

I've already run all the free anti-virus & anti-spyware stuff to no avail. It's also shut down my Task Manager, Windows Media Player, and I think it may be what's caused my internet to go down as well. So I'm really in a bind. I can't download anything from the internet.

Is there another way to get to System Restore or do you have any other suggestions? I'm going to end up reformatting but I need a solution in the meantime.

If you have the Windows installation or restore disks, try booting from them, to get to a decent working environment on the computer. If not, try to boot into Safe Mode, and see if anything works better. Can you get Microsoft/Windows Update to work? Updates frequently bypass the usual installation processes. If you can get a number of updates, or better yet a major update to your Windows system, such as Service Pack 3 for XP, they are likely to over-write the system files and registry entries that are screwed up. Maybe even an update for Windows Media Player would do it. If you can't get Microsoft Update to work through your browser, try to get it working through the Automatic Updates, in Control Panel.

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

Tru to carry out in safe mode. If data on your hard disk is corrupted it is advisable to format the hard disk and reinstall the operating system (usually Windows XP) More details at http://fixit.in/format.html
