Is it safe to burn a candle inside a ceramic jar? I was hot glueing stuff to the outside of it, and it was getting pretty warm inside.

Yes. Ceramic is fired to hundreds of degrees to dry and harden it. It can handle the highest temps a candle could produce, or your oven even.

we've made about 120 candles in 4'' ceramic flower pots. just make sure that you plug the water drain hole in the bottom of the pot first, we used patching cement.

Sure. Use pillar or votive candle depending on the size of the container. You can also pour your own right in the container. I recycle all of my candles.
