When my son was not gaining weight the doctor told me to give him PediaSure. It is a nutritional drink that comes in different flavors like Vanilla and Strawberry. If he is not eating enough sometimes it is just a phase. My child lost his appetite at 18 months. He was slowly losing weight. I followed my Dr.'s advice on the Pediasure and made sure that he would eat at least small portions of food throughout the day. Now he is 2 years old and he eats so much. He will have his 3 meals per day and snack on bananas and oranges throughout the day.
Even though you didn't ask I think it is important to watch your child to see if he has tears when he cries or is urinating often enough during the day. If he is not that may mean that he is dehydrated and will need to see a doctor.

I have a 3 year old and I can't count the times I have talked to my doctor about him looking skinny and the way he eats she always tells me his wight is right on track with his height and age and their is nothing to be worried about. She also tells me to try to keep him away from junk foods and limit the juice he takes in water is best. If your child is acting normal, playing, and jumping around like always then I think he/she is fine don't force he/she to eat or make it a battle my son tells me when he is hungry or tells me what he wants to eat but most of the time it seems to me that he doesn't eat a lot but when I bring him to see his pediatrician it turns out he is fine and growing a healthy boy. But if you think he/she is not acting normal or eating well then I would bring him/her to see there pediatrician. I know it can be very scary to see your child look very skinny believe me I have gone through it but sometimes it's just us mothers being over protected. Good Luck!

It might just be his body type. I have a skinny 6 yr old boy. Its so hard to find pants to fit. I have to get slims but even then sometimes they are too big. He eats plenty but he inherited my dad's skinny gene. I don't really think I CAN fatten him up.Oh also, he was never chubby even at toddler age, it was kind of weird to see a skinny baby.

Our little boy has many eating problems. The doctors have told us to melt butter in food and he has carbohydrate supplements called duocal and polycose to add to food and/or drinks. They are prescriptions. But even with this stuff, he doesn't gain much weight. I definitely helps though.

You don't want to obsess much about his weight as he will begin to do the same thing which isn't healthy. However, if you're concerned about it give him a snack in the morning of whole milk and bananas and another snack in the afternoon of something similar. I have to make my girls drink 1% milk to keep them from being pudgy pies...so whole milk will certainly do the trick and it's good for him.

Talk to your pediatrician first to see if it's o.k. or if they really think he's underweight. Our pediatrician suggested we have our 6-year old drink two bottles of Boost a day, which is like chocolate milk with extra vitamins and such. He really likes it. He calls it his "football milk", because if he wants to grow up and play football (which I hope he doesn't by the way), he knows he has to get bigger.
