First of all you would have to get approval from Canadians to allow the U.S. to join Canada which would never happen. Secondly, you would have to have U.S. citizens supporting such a move, which would never happen. Thirdly, the U.S. would become a province of Canada, not a state. And for the one misinformed responder, Canada is an independent Nation, has been since 1867. We recognize our British and French roots by using a parliamentary style of government and being an official bilingual Nation. The U.S. on the other hand, never mind...I'll get enough thumbs down without bringing up the slavery issue, fences along borders , invading sovereign nations just because you can, guns, health care for all, etc.
Most everyday citizens of either country love the uniqueness of their own Nation, the main difference is one keeps growing and the other only thinks they are better. You choose which is which.

For bad neighbour;
I appreciate your views but at the same time, I hope you never get a serious illness that is not covered by some sort of insurance. It would be a shame for a hard working person to lose their home because of an illness. That is what Canada's Health care System is all about. In theory, our poorest citizen recieves the same health care as our richest and you have a problem with that?

No, we should annex Canada, as it is only in our way. Turn the most Northern Areas into prison colonies, and invite the rest of the population to move into a warmer climate.
