I think this is a trait which comes from our primeval past when we were all running around in animal skins and living in caves. You can see the same attitude in the animal kingdom where the male of the species will try to commandeer as many females to his hareem as possible in order to ensure the succession of his genetic bloodline.
When young men become sexually active, they seems to become competitive with the other males in their peer group to see who can get the most girls into bed. The more girls you manage to get: the greater status you have within your peer group.
I think it is also a practice that shows the hypocritical side of the male psyche. The dicotomy lies between how many men look at those men and women who sleep around. When a man sleeps around with many women, he is almost praised as some kind of a folk hero: when a women sleeps around with many men, she is considered to be a bit of a trollop. The majority of women are far more responsible and don't think playing around is a very moral way to behave and consider members of both sexes who indulge themselves in this way as equally undesirable, especially if they don't use a condom as a precautionary measure.
Nowadays, of course, with all the consequences of unplanned pregnancies and the dangers from sexually transmitted diseases like HIV AIDS and so on, it is a highly dubious practice and not one that should be followed by socially responsible people. Sex is a beautiful thing, so why demean it by doing it with someone you are not going to commit the rest of your life to?

Important? I wouldn't consider "important' the right word. Men (and women) gain experience by practicing activities over a period of time. As long as those activities are practiced safely and that the partners understand the level of commitment involved, then future partners will be the beneficiaries of the experience gained. (I hope that helps!) ;)

because men are men and they will never change or be faithful. it is impossible for a man to stay away from women whether they are in relationships, married or anything else. thats just the way of the male population.

It's "important" to us only insofar as we can brag about our "conquests" to our friends. And most of us grossly exaggerate our sex lives just to impress. I did so too when I was a young man. And, to tell truth, bragging was fun. People believed us -- at least we liked to think they did.
Thanks for the nostalgia and the smile it brought to my face.

Its instinctual for men (and to some extent women) to want to shag as much as they can. Its a modern way of thinking that tries to impose manogamy - I think thats just about it.
