Since I can remember I have always had this big bump in the middle of the roof of my mouth. Until today I thought it was normal. My boyfriend saw it and thought it was strange..I just said it was normal. Then I asked my parents and they said they didn't have it and looked at mine. They claim they've never seen it before which made me feel like I was going crazy. I don't remember ever not having it and they've looked in my mouth a ton of times since I was born. Obviously the dentists and doctors have looked in my mouth before too so it shouldn't be anything bad since they've never said anything. I am just wondering why my palete is like this? And could this have had any effect on my health?

Stop worrying.
It's called - torus palatinus. It's totally benign. Only causes problems if you need to be fitted for dentures. If so, it usually has to be removed.
So, be sure to continue good dental hygiene so that you don't get dentures.
By the way, some people also have them on the sides of their lower jaw.

I agree 100% with the 2nd answer.
It is called a torus.
Your palate is actually 2 bones that grew together and joined in the center. For some people when the bones grow together, a bump is created. This is a torus.
I like to compare tori to freckles. Some people have them... some people don't. But, you don't look at someone with freckles and say, "AH! Go to the doctor...you have marks all over your face!" It's perfectly normal. But, not everybody has them!

I had a hard lump on the roof of my mouth for many many years and one day I noticed that it had completely disappeared. I don't even know how long it had been gone before I discovered that it was no longer there.. I had never worried about it because I had had it for such a long time that I thought it was normal.l.

It is called a torus palitinus and is considered totally normal. It is just excess bone covered by soft tissue. As stated in another answer, the only reason you would ever need it removed is if you needed an upper denture. I have one as well and did not realize it until I was in dental school. If you are still unsure though, ask your dentist about it at your next visit.

You may have an abscess. An abscess is a tender, easily pressed mass generally surrounded by a colored area from pink to deep red. The middle of an abscess is full of pus and debris. If it was of concern your dentist would have informed you. Some people can have a cleft pallet which is often like a hole or dip. IF you are really concerned then make an appointment with your dentist but I am sure its nothing to be worried about.

You should not have a bump on the roof of your mouth, especially if you have never had it before. it could be anything from oral cancer to an inflammation. Call a dentist today and go see them immediately to have it looked at. If no dentist office is open call your family doctor.

as far as I know, it's normal. I forget what it's called. My friend has it too and he's okay. Maybe, it will be harder if you want to use a removable denture for the upper jaw, because of the kind of the palate.
