Munchausens is fairly unlikely. See site below for info.
Your MIL is probably just lonely and jealous of her daughters life. I would take a guess that your wife is the only or closest child. As you put in the title of your question she wants attention and sees the way of getting as being "ill". Even if you're annoyed with her interferring you are giving her attention (good or bad does not matter its all attention!).
It may be difficult, but try giving her a couple of hours a week undivided attention. If she moans about what you are doing with your ignore it, do not rise to her.
Good luck;

How someone see's it is, Sometimes any attention, even negative attention, is better than nothing. She may have whats called:-Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, but a Doctors is the only one who could determine if she has or not got this.

This ISNT just something Children get, many adluts suffer from it too. Many adults never get it dignosed as they see it as just the way they are.

This maybe just a form of depression.
She maybe feeling unloved in someway even though she may not admit it. Have you actually tried talking to her? If you wont listen, try writing her a letter. Tell her your worried and you wnat her to know she can talk to you if theres anything thats worrying her.

Sometimes just talking is the best cure

Yes, she is seeking attention, she may also be hypochondriac. Have you actually spent any time talking and listening to her, what her concerns are, why she's unhappy if you go out visiting ? Does she get out much herself ? Does she fear you and your wife will go and live apart from her ? Once you know what her fears and concerns are, you'll have a better idea of how to proceed.

she sure has some issues, maybe she is afraid that one of you might figure out that she has told a lie to someone.
