I`ve just received my first essay back and got a good result,i got acheived and my tutor said my essay was good. It`s the first one i`ve ever written as i didn`t do school so am now trying to go back to study again, anyway i`m only starting off in a sort of return to study course and i got acheived which is the best mark you can get for this course, anyway what i was wondering was how different are the assignments from this course to the real courses and is my mark really good if you know what i mean or is it just the tutor humouring me?I feel rather proud of myself at the moment but don`t want to feel like an idiot if it`s for nothing!!

Well done on getting yourself back into studying and on joining the OU! I've been with them for three years now doing different science courses with the aim of getting myself a BSc in a few years time. It's thoroughly rewarding and highly addictive!

I take it you're doing an Openings or Breakthrough course, in which case you do just get 'achieved', 'just achieved' or 'not achieved', so you're doing really well, particularly as you say it's your first essay.

The feedback from your tutor is really important, so take note of what s/he said in the comments and use that info to help you on your next essay or course.

If you're at all concerned about anything, contact your tutor or a study adviser at your regional centre.

And don't forget the online OU forums. If you haven't visited your course forum yet, then get on there as soon as you can! You'll find plenty of people in the same situation as you, and it really helps to know you're not on your own.

Good luck with the rest of your studies!!

What course are you doing and what mark did you get? I seem to remember 85 is the usual minimum for a 1st, but I can't remember the other boundaries. If your tutor said your essay is good, that's definitely something to be proud of - well done!

The tutor will not compromise the standards required just to humour you. You got the result because you deserved it !

Well done !

Open University is very time consuming so best of luck with it, i hope you get what you want from it.

It sounds like the first thing you need is confidence. You can improve that by sticking with it, regular thumbs up from the tutor will improve your self-belief.

Maybe re-read your question and see if it could have been improved with more sentence structure and white space ?

You are right to feel proud. The marking and comments are no different from "normal" higher education establishments. In fact the marker is probably employed in a day job by the other establishments
