It depends on very many things. You asked a question with a lot of different answers depending on the red wine you are opening!

If you have a young red wine it is always very best to decant it to allow it to open and breath.

Same with white.

You have to consider the wine. age of the wine, variety, and style of making!

An old wine or a year that isn't lasting should be decanted in a thin circumrefence decanter to prevent oxidation or not decanten at all.
