It's their arrogance...

I'm an atheist and you should respect me for me. I respect your beliefs even though they are different to mine, I am not a bad person I just don't agree with your beliefs but I still respect them. I think it's horrible that you say 'it's their arrogance.' If you were true to your religion you should 'love thy neighbour'. I agree some are ignorant to others beliefs but that also includes religious people.

You should respect atheists, because you were an atheist once.

Never forget that *everybody* is born an atheist. Nobody knows anything about the existence of God until they are taught about Him.

Thus, the *default* position is to be an atheist. How far you move away from that position depends upon what you believe.

If you are the sort of person that will believe anything, without evidence, then you may well tend to be religious.

If, on the other hand, you are the sort of person that requires some proof before you will believe something, then you will tend to stay an atheist.

Sadly, young children almost always fall into the first category. We have evolved to be that way, so that when a parent tells a child "Don't eat the red berries on that bush, because they'll make you sick" we believe it without proof and therefore we survive to adulthood.

As adults we change and start making independent choices of our own. Some people continue to believe what they are told without evidence and tend to become, or remain, religious. Others learn, or choose, to make those choices based on evidence and these people tend to return to being atheist.

Atheists aren't arrogant, they just believe something different to what (I assume) you believe. Yes, they say that they know they're right, but then religious people also say that *they* know they're right too, so does that make religious people arrogant too?

As far as I can figure out you do not respect atheists because they are arrogant. The way for you to respect atheists is to realise that arogance is a trait that does no only occur among atheists, theists and agnostics can be arrogant.

Well, agnostics are the least arrogant, when we talk about athetists, agnostistics and christians alone. The similarities between athetists and Christians may be what causes the conflict. They are equaly arrogant on equally opposite beliefs. Agnostics, simply say, "I don't know and I can never know." We admit to our ignorant, but Christians and Athetiests, believe that they are capable of knowing. Then again, perhaps, one or the other is beyond my intellect. Then again and again, if Christians are beyond my intellect, why would God make someone so stupid as have the inability to believe?

Interesting. I'm disgusted by theists, deists and agnostics. Fence sitters unable to even make a decision about what they believe?

As for arrogance - what could be more arrogant in preaching a load of nonsense based on a mythological sky-fairy who doesnt exist and wanting others to accept the same irrational drivel?

What makes you think I want your respect? I don't need the respect of anyone so blatantly arrogant as you are in asking this so-called question anyway.

I know a lot of atheists (all of my family, most of my friends) and they're not arrogant, actually they rarely if ever talk about or discuss religion at all. Only those who try to 'convert' others (can you use convert when they're trying to *not* make someone believe? :)) are arrogant... but so are those very strong believers of other religions who're trying to shove their religion down my throat. Most people in any religion (or lack thereof) aren't arrogant at all, they just believe (or don't believe) whatever they want and never bother others with it.

Arrogant how? Because they say there isn't a God? How is that any different than a Theist saying there definitely is one?

If one is arrogant, then the other is as well.

What's arrogant here is claiming to know enough about atheists to say they're all arrogant.

Most theists are just as arrogant, if not more arrogant. Atheists just grow weary of theists throwing the bible in their faces....so some of them retaliate harshly.
