to become a Chef...
a degree is not required but knowledge is...
prepare to work long hours and devote yourself to the kitchen
you must be able to create recipes and do food costs
you must present yourself professionally and show excellent leadership qualities
you must be able to at a moments notice to take over the line and get your cooks out of the weeds.
you must be ready to go to work even on your day off(what's that?LOL)
you must worry about and treat your kitchen like you would your child.
you must make sure your kitchen is clean and in working condition at all times in case of surprise inspections
most of all you must love what you do your heart must truly be in the kitchen or else "Chef" is nothing but a title.
oh yeah...you've got to be REALLY good at handling stress!!
Beer helps!
LOL

You can graduate from culinary school with a degree or you can work in a kitchen long enough that your co-workers start refering to you as 'chef'. A degree is not required. I never went to college for it, but after working in a high end catering kitchen for 4 years as a hourly line cook, I was bumped up to salary & given the title of sous chef.

You can give yourself just about any title you want - just be prepared to answer for any claims you make in relation to the title. You want to called chef! then go for it. You want to be called Lord Bugle Head of Farmington Mews! then go for it. However, should ;you decide you want a more distinguished title such as Doctor, Professor, Nurse, or one of the titles used by professional organizations, then you have to be prepared for a great deal of time and work.

Professional licencing organizations and governing bodies which operate under legislation can issue "titles' to qualifying members. In some case, no actual title is attached, such as an engineer. Universities, grant a title of Doctor to those who have received a PHD or Doctor of Letters.

Yea, a culinary degree gives yo the title automaticly. Some people preffer to either go to colleges for their title, normaly takes about 2 years, or they go through by experience in the work force.

Look around online for any art institutes in your area. And watch for the tuition, it's a doozey..
