Windows XP comes with a zip program. Otherwise, use one of the free winzip programs from http://www.download.com Check the REVIEWS and RATINGS, then look for Freeware.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

If you have XP it is built in.
To zip: hi-lite the files you want to zip. Right clk any of them and select Send To. Choose Compressed zip File.
Windows will name the file (you can rename it) and it will show up in the folder you are in. It will appear as a folder with a zipper across it. You can save it with a password if you wish. This file can be sent email as an attachment.
To open with XP - just dbl clk it.
If you don't have XP, go with the other answers.

WinXP comes with a built in Zip reader, and extractor, so you don't need to download anything. If you want to compress files or look at other compressed formats, 7zip is the way to go.

like many have mentioned xp has it built in. I still prefer winzip - use it as a trial, if you like it buy it - I used to use a free one; 7-zip. Excellent zip utility that does many formats. Download link for both:

Hey,
If you need a recent version of Winrar. Here is a free download: http://j.mp/1p3Psco
To open compressed files (zip rar jar iso 7z cab uue gz....) you have to use WinRar. With WinRar you can easily decompress files and folders.
Best
