i hate to sound like an old fogey (41) but (cliche coming up) when i was my kids age i was always outside playing sports etc..
Interaction with others seems to be a thing of the past, the only time kids seem to meet is in the playground at break time.
in my opinion this habit is mainly responcible for the unacceptable amount of overweight unfit kids in the west.
like i said it could be the ramblings of a grumpy old git......

I love my mp3 profile, i was actualy going to mention that i have a son of 10 and a daughter of 5, when i was her age i used to wander around too, i just wold not let her....this could be down to a media panic but i would take quite a lot of convincing

Yes they do...
But at the same token their are so many FREAKS and PERVERTS running around these days (or atleast the medias has brought them to our attention) that I as a parent am afraid to let my kid out on his own w/out adult supervision at all times...but you are right when I was a kid as young as 4 and 5 I'd walk a half mile on an old country road where people would just fly by to meet my little friend to play - I look back sometimes and wonder how I made it to adulthood.

Well I limit the video games to 2 hours (my boys are 9 and 5), they get to watch a dvd on non school nights and they watch the cartoons in the morning (and of course The Simpsons at 6). The rest of the time they are either at school or playing cars, or whatever other game takes their fancy or imagination. Telly and video games are ok in moderation but I know if you want any sense out of my kids the telly has to be switched off! My youngest is still too young to be playing outside on his own and my eldest doesn't get out during the winter nights because its too dark. If there was more for them to do we'd all be a lot happier!

Hey - I'm a grumpy old git too (four years your senior). Want to start a club?
There wasn't so much telly when we were young 'uns. I got bored watching the test card after a couple of hours in the afternoon and had to go out and play. Never has video games either, so had to do something else. If I were a lad today I'd be sat on my backside in front of the telly/games/computer all day too!

I agree, I have four kids and I do try to limit the T.V. and video time. But I can tell you they do watch and play more than they should. I only allow my kids to go outside when I can go out with them. We live in a pretty nice neighborhood but, not far from here is a pretty rough area. A lot of crime shootings ect. We had some jerk for 3 mo. a while back trying to pick up kids until they caught him. I do however try to play with my kids more often we play games ect. I guess for me it's a safety issue I'd rather they be in here playing games or watching t.v. than letting them go outside and wondering where they are. p.s. hopefully we will be moving to the country soon then they can play out all day.

You are correct. The fault lies with the parent. Take the TV/Vid games out of the bedroom, end of problem.
