For a large group, or for an individual?
I've been on a group Buddhist retreat before. For the most part, people were off to themselves--the monastery had a large area of wooded land, and most people camped. We all came back to the monastery for meals, and then a couple teachings each day, vajrasattva one day, and evening meditation. You could go up to the monastery at any time and just sort of hang out if you wished, but there was plenty of free time for people to meditate on their own.
