Polygamy is practiced in Islam souly for the protection of women. In the old times society was very abusive, violent and cruel to women who had no family, whose husbands had died and so forth.Having a husband was the only way to have a decent life so hence the practice of polygamy.
But it must be remembered that polygamy is not abused in Islam and the interest of the women involved, equal status and love for one and the same for all.

In some Muslim countries there are more women then men so the fact that a Muslim man can have up to 4 wives in Islam is neccessary for the woman's sescurity, protection, and safety. It provides balance and stability for the woman and also for any orphans that the woman might have. A man is allowed up to 4 wives as long as he can provide for all of them and treat them equally and justly. If he can not than he should only have 1 wife.

Polygamy is not obligatory in Islam.. it is just an option... Many people criticize Islam for allowing this... But, when we compare Islam to other religions... (Marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one.") The phrase 'Marry only one' is found only in the Holy Qur'an... Islam is the only religion that tells us to marry only one. No other religious scripture.. be it of Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, etc. does not have this.. It's only the respective country's laws that forbid polygamy, eg. India.

This is one of the laws of Islam and despite the social taboo attached to it, i think it is an excellent way to help poor women specially in underdeveloped countries. If a man has his wife's consent and he decides to marry a poor woman to provide her a family and a better life, I see nothing wrong with it.
I personally would never venture into polygamy but I am not blind to its benefits.
And please remember Islam allows but does not encourage polygamy as it clearly says in the Quran in Surah Al Nisah that no man can do jusice between more than one wife. (Surah 4, verse 3 and verse 129)
Cheers

He may have as many wives as he can support and treat equally. Is this is truly possible? I don't think so.
