You should wait and get paid at the end of the night--that's how the real world works. Paychecks are usually a week behind, so you should treat this like any other job and get paid at the end of your shift.
What's the harm in getting paid five hours later? That's the way I see it. Plus, the parents will not have any opportunity to think you are being rude or that you might mis-use the money while they are gone....i.e, the comment about buying liquor or something.
You ask a good question though. I do think that at some point say a year or two down the road, if you have regular gig with these people (like you babysit every other Saturday night without fail), that there may be an occasion where it would be OK to request payment in advance--like your mom's birthday is coming up on Wednesday and you need to money to buy her a gift--then, once you have built a close professional relationship with them it MIGHT be ok to ask for payment a day or two early (assuming you know you will babysitting that weekend). Don't make that a habit though. I would not do that more than once a year and then you'd need a really good reason for asking for the money in advance. So ,maybe even then it'd be best to plan ahead and never be in the position to ask for payment in advance.

No. As a mother I am very concerned about the well being of my child, and a good trustworthy sitter is hard to find. If you have babysat for this family on a regular basis and have done a good job and you have a VERY good reason for needing payment in advance, then go for it, other than that it's just not appropriate. You might also lose face and not be able to babysit for them again, or lose out on being able to network with their friends to get other sitting jobs. People will not refuse to pay you afterwards unless you've done something that would upset them, such as not taking care of the kid very well, letting them get hurt, breaking something valuable because of carelessness, or neglecting and/or hurting their child.

No one in the workforce gets paid for working before they complete the actual job.
If a babysitter asked me for payment in advance, I wouldn't like it.

Depends how well the people know you?
They may think you want to buy liquor or drugs and be afraid of giving you money early.
Anyone that is that anxious is usually in trouble.
It's a crazy world out there today.

not if you are baby sitting for that person for the first time, after you baby sit for them a couple if times, i don't think it would be bad. but d don't ask every time, just the times you need the money right away.
