That's a very good question.
If the seats were to face backward, then in case of a collision they would only be pressed hard against the seats. (A head rest should be a must to prevent whiplash injury to the neck).
With the seats facing the front, each seat must be provided with a seat belt to prevent injury. This increases the cost.
I suppose the reason could be psychological. With the seats facing the front, one could see new views coming every instant, whereas with the seats facing the back one can see only the same boring views for a long time.

In some buses I have seen ( not many in India ) , there are a few seats facing each other , opposite from Driver's direction . One reason is that a few people get Motion Sickness if sitting in opposite direction . Also , passengers can look in forward direction to see what bus stop is coming next from a bit far . This , they won't be able to do if sitting in reverse direction .

This might just be the question of the year! Really, an amazing idea man. Full credits to u. The other answers saying that the people need to see where they r going make no sense. No one is so stupid as to not know where he is goin if he doesnt see the front. Moreover it is a lot more comfortable to face the other way. But probably becoz of tradition, it is not changed. Well, I'm studying mechanical engineering and in future I would like to design cars. I would definitely keep ur idea in mind, dont worry. Thanx for the idea.

Several reasons:
- Most people like to see where they are going.
- Some people get motion sickness easier when facing backward.
- When the passengers face forward, the driver can see and control them better (especially in schoolbusses).
An argument "against" is that in case of a crash or a sudden stop, people facing forward are propelled out of their seats (unless strapped in), while passengers facing backward only get forcefully pressed into their seats.

1. so that you know where you are going rather than where you are coming from
2. because some people get motion sickness if they 'see' the road going away
3. if you keep seats facing each other like in mumbai local trains, then you can fit in fewer seats because of the back rest angle.
Incidentally some of the new low floor buses have the seats above the wheel arches facing the other way because this works best in terms of space utilisation and location of doors.

I've been on a bus that had seats facing each other. It had the bendable waist in the middle, whatever that's called...

the question is not correct in the way u asked. there are lots of buses facing both sides. but most face the driver. this helps passengers to be more alert and helps reduce casualities when in time of crash.

This is India Man !!!!
You have to keep an eye on the roads and traffic.. these drivers ride their bus like bikes !!! -- the condition is same wherever you go ... in delhi (blue lines) or in Pune ( buses in bad conditin with iron sheets dripping out of it)
Now the logical answer:
You need to sit lik that if you want to watch out for your destination.

Because that would too safe. In a crash the passengers would be pushed into their seats instead of flying out of them.
