It may be possible after all I caught chicken pox from a friends son a few years back, the kid was in the same room as me but never made physical contact, I legged it every time he came close!

Journal of The American Academy of Dermatology 2005 July(53) 146p The "chicken" in "chicken pox" probably evolved from a misunderstanding and mispronunciation of the word giccan. Under the definition of itch in the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, the etymology reads:[Middle English yicche, from Old English gicce, from giccan, to itch.]

No - The pox is only viable if it's transferred from touching infected fluid - ie. being in contact with someone when they cough / sneeze - touching one of their blisters etc... the pox does not survive outside the body. It can only be caught from direct contact with fluid. Believe it or not it's actually quite hard to catch!

Only if you got it from someone who's sick and has been coughing on it and all, and then started to read it immediately... but if you were in such close contact with someone then you'd probably have contact in other ways as well, just by being with that person. If you mean from a secondhand book from a used bookstore, no way, those germs don't live anywhere near that long on a book or other item!

No, I do not think so. To catch chicken pox, you have to be in close contact with someone who has it.
