Many cats like the water. My Boys, Rusty & Scooter, would happily go out in the pouring rain and get completely soaked, and it didn't bother them a bit. Rusty even joined me in the shower a couple times!
I know a cat that allows himself to be bathed without objection. (Not that bathing a cat is such a good idea, but his mom thinks it is...)
Then there's the Turkish Van, a breed named for Lake Van in Turkey, where the breed originated. Vans are famous for the way they jump in the lake and swim out to meet the fishing fleet and greet their humans when they return from a day of fishing.
Actually, cats would be better off if they stayed dry, since getting soaked isn't good fur their fur, as others have written. But some of them don't seem to worry about that.

Not all cats are afraid of the water, its just that its a different kind of terrain that most cats are not suited or equipped to handle. Most cats walk like they got sticky paws and so avoid water puddles when ever possible.
But some cats are quite accustomed to water, I had a childhood friend that had a cat that liked to jump into the water and swim around, it would dry off by crawling out of the pool lay in one spot to drain, then go off and run around darting everywhere until it was dry.
I used to have a cat that liked to sit in the toilet, when it was a very hot day, he'd sit there and beg for someone to flush it just so it would fill up and he'd just sit there with his head hangin on the rim. My dad called him crazy and stupid, but he was so precious.

Cats aren't scared of water, they don't like it, true, but they aren't scared of it. Many wild and domesticated cats actual fish when they can by scooping small minnows and fish close to the surface or close to the shore -- where ever the cat can get near them. Despite their thick coats, they are originally desert animals. They sleep during the day in the shade when it is warm and hunt during in the night when the desert becomes cold.
When a cat sees some fish that he or she is trying to get a meal and falls in, their fur becomes wet. Water is cooling as it evaporates, so instead of keeping a cat warm like it's supposed to during the cold desert night, wet fur makes a cat colder until the fur completely dries. So cats when cats become wet, they become uncomfortably cold as well.

I wouldn't say cats are afraid of water, it is just a matter of getting used to it. I had one cat that did not want anything to do with water, and another that would wade thru it when I was working in it, and didn't mind getting wet in the rain

Cats are not afraid of water. Some cats love to watch the bath when it is filling up with water. Cats just don't like to get wet, because then they have to sit around for the next hour licking themselves dry.

It's not that there afraid of water, most cats can't swim and that's the real reason. That's not necessarily true for lions or tigers, they sometimes love the water.
