It's the West Indian influence on our language, sadly. Other examples, instead of "I would have ..." they say "I would OF" (and write it like that), and other bad habits. I hate it all. Speak the Queen's English or clear off back home, I say.

Innit though!

It is just part of the street language or youth language of today. And your a fine one to talk...'Learn proper English' is incorrect it should be 'Learn English properly' (Sorry...just being picky, and my English is far from perfect, so I have no right to correct you or anyone)

I never actually say the word, I always use 'isn't it' and I agree when I hear people say 'innit' it can be annoying. It does not matter how intelligent someone is, has soon has they end the sentence with 'innit' they just sound....well...stupid...or dumb.

Mind you I remember people saying 'innit' in the 70's (I was but a lad then) So I am not sure when the usage came in. I think it has it's origins in one of the districts of London....not sure which one.

It started out as a regional thing. Around where I live, people of all ages say 'innit' and 'summat'. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as people know the 'proper' way to speak too. Unfortunately a lot of teenagers now don't really understand what 'innit' means and so use it instead of other 'tag questions' like 'You have the scissors, don't you?', 'You haven't got a bag, have you?' etc. It's annoying, but what can you do?

There's a kid on my street, who I know and he's a great kid, who uses innit all the time. When he's talking to me I always say "isn't it what?" when he says "innit" and he always looks at me like I'm an idiot.

I think that the English language is changing, for the worse in my opinion, but I guess people have said this for as long as English has been spoken.

Hear hear!

It's worse when they add a 'bruv' on the end. Innit Bruv? Really winds me up!

Until recently though, I thought I was literally being asked a question when someone said 'Innit.' They'd be like -

'I'm late for work innit.'

And I'd be nodding an d smiling

why are you so bothered what other people say, we bought alot of African and west Indians here in chains to be our slaves so if they dont respect our culture and language i say they have the right not to. i think ALOT of the families who live here that are descendants of our slaves would have been very happy to stay in their home country so all you lazy racist c**ts out there stop telling em to go home. now days they can support themselves in this country because we are too up ourselves and lazy to do menial jobs for minimum wadge. also we helped destroy their home countries but killing their elders, who are so important in an culture that passes its knowledge and wisdom orally, when we bought the young ones here as our slaves, raping their women and treating them worse than we did our animals. so we owe them much more than a place they can do a sh1t job for minimum wage. get over yourselves all of you.
do you know when us brits invaded australia we buried the aboriginal babies up to their necks in the sand and kicked their heads off? that if a white woman was raped it was her fault for making the man want her and then saying no?
make sure you know the truth about your culture before you force it onto others
