Hi Ashley...Intelligence is a relative term to the species of the animal as ALL animals have the capacity to learn including cats and even small goldfish. Two primary factors will influence accuracy in the interpretation of any test for animal intelligence -- an understanding of the animal's natural history and an understanding of the limits of the test. An animal will naturally show an aptitude for a concept it needs or uses regularly in the wild.

As an animal trainer we discover while we are educated that intelligence has very little to do with how trainable an animal is. Yet, as humans, the subject of intelligence continues to fascinate us.

So both dogs and cats as well as with most other animal species are trainable. None are more intelligent than one another it's just they are different in their abilities based on their natural behaviours.

I could go on and on with the scientific aspect and the anthropomorphic aspects which are the biggest reason for the dispute.

Both my cats have learned to do command based behaviours such as sit, lay down, roll over, wave, high-five, sit up, use the human toilet and so much more. It goes all back to the techniques used to be able to communicate between man and species. As I've mentioned before even goldfish can learn behaviours if the proper techniques to communicate are used. Here are a bunch of videos of goldfish pushing a ball through a hoop, down a mini soccer/football field: http://www.fish-school.com/gallery.htm

Cats are extremely smart, far smarter than dogs (and I am a "dog person") .... the average cat has intelligence level and understanding of a 4-5 year old child. They just don't want YOU to know it!!!

My cat has a lot of personality, and shows his brains all the time. He understands what my hubby and I are saying oftentimes, and will walk to the door into our bedroom and wait for us when we start talking about going to bed. He gets upset if we don't let "his" dog in fast enough, or if we scold "his" dog.

There are many amazing stories about cats, that show how smart they are.

Oh honey bunch... some cats PRETEND to be stupid to lull you into thinking they are harmeless and helpless so that you will do everything for them. You fell for the "clueless look"? Ay-yay-yay.
