If you scold a dog you have to do it immediately when you catch them doing something wrong. Their memory is EXTREMELY short and if you scold them after the fact (going through the garbage or pooping) you shouldn't scold them because they won't remember what they did. I suggest a pinch collar if you have a larger dog. If you have a smaller dog you should (sounds funny but works) loudly say "NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!" as you continue to walk up to them and then pinch the back of their neck. Just as a mother would nip the pups neck to teach them. After that stand there and turn your back. Do not look at the dog and they will definitely get the message.

Scolding him will prevent him from coming to you at all, praising will tell him that he can come whenever he wants too. I'd just ignore. If he doesn't come at first or second, the reward vanishes. First off though, I'd restart the training! Give him a toy, treat or play with him every time he comes to you, even though you're not calling him. So when he approaches you you reward him, do it every time he comes to you. If he loves to chase you can start running when he comes to you, and when he catches you he gets a treat. Also sometimes when he's coming to you, call his name while he's running to you and reward. A good thing to use would be a long line. It should be approx. 9 meters or longer, attach it to the dogs harness/collar (preferably harness) instead of letting him run all off leash. You don't even need to hold it, but when the dog doesn't come to you you step on it. One thing I've done a couple of times with my dog is that I pretend I've found something on the ground and put some treats there. When I see that he notices me I walk away and he goes to explore the area where I just were. So now everytime I bow down and look at the ground he dashes and tries to find it, he's also staying close to me because he thinks I find a lot of treasures and stuff, so he doesn't need to go on own adventures lol. Oh yeah, I do this in the forest mostly so no one wonders why the heck I'm scratching the ground in the middle of the street.

You should only be scolding your dog while she is in the act of something you don't want her to be doing. If you scold her afterwards, she won't know why you are even scolding her. Afterwards, don't ignore her (it's just plain inhumane) treat her like you normally do. Just remember, dogs don't remember very long, ignoring her will just make her think what she is doing at that time is wrong when you are in the wrong for ignoring her.

They forget within seconds. To teach her, you must bring the reason for your unhappiness in front of her. They have trouble relating the activity if it was way too long ago.
Its too much trouble to set up too many rules and its more fun to play with her. If you want to nag, by all means, do so. When you see the bad thing she did (even if it was an hour ago) You can mention it , point it out in a stern voice. Sometimes they put the two together, sometimes they dont. It all depends on the dog.

When I scold my Dog, I take a paper and wrap it up and pat her on her hind leg, don't hurt her, just pat her and she knows it doesn't hurt, but she gets a wonderful message that she has done something wrong. Then let her go and play with her afterwards if you wish. The lesson is instilled in her brain. Dogs learn very fast if they are a good Bloodline, but if you have a Mutt, your in for the fight of the Century...lol

Why are you scolding her? I hope this doesn't mean hitting, kicking etc.?
You should ignore her for 3-5 minutes - go away if she keeps following you.
Yes, most breeds will forget things like that quickly BUT there are some breeds that NEVER forget. I know one of these breeds is the Dalmatian.

What does she do that requires scolding? Ignoring her is a good way of disciplining her, but once the bad behaviour has stopped she should be given attention again.

If he/she is a Outside dog then just put him/her in the pen.If it is an inside dog just put him/her in a room by itself and even if it does start whimpering just let her stay there until about 45 minutes.I had to do that when my puppy chews on my socks and slippers it works. The only time you have to be mad at your dog is only when you are scolding him/her.
