Usually late at night when I close my eyes, instantly a random image will flash across my vision. I've talked to a couple other people about it and few of them have experienced this before as well, but most had not. It's usually very shocking and I open my eyes immediately. Can anyone explain to me what causes such a thing?

your brain is re playing pictures it has taken. You are lucky.. my mind does not think in pictures.. when I think or dream.. I cannot even see faces. Sometimes I sit somewhere quiet and try and try to 'see' my boyfriends face with my eyes close... I just don't think in pictures... I wish I did

I think its called an "after-image" and i believe its normal and harmless for those that experience it. but if these images are mostly disturbing ones then that could be a sign of another problem. are youre dreams also mostly nightmares? its possible that you are undergoing some kind of trauma or stress and your subconscious is trying to deal with it. these images really shouldnt be "shocking", at least not all the time. you should talk about this with your doc and see what he or she suggests. ps: this happens to me often too, but i would never describe the images as "shocking" or even as "disturbing". the worst i could say about them is that they are sometimes not very sensible, but theyve never caused me to feel uncomfortable.

I like it. Mostly I see faces very clearly. When I try to focus on the image, it is immediately gone.

Your eyes have stored images into your brain, and when you close your eyes, your brain is releasing those images that have been stored. It's normal. It happens to everyone, hun!
